(52 posts)... to it's conclusion as laid out in the book.
Just sayin'...

(12,041 posts)Based on the Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George RR Martin, it is a fantasy series similar to Lord of the Rings but more realistic in the sense that it takes place in a world very similar to our own during medevil times and focuses more on humans rather than magic and fantasy creatures.

(26,449 posts)Martin is awesome and ruthless with his characters. There are many many plot twists that totally make sense but leave you blindsided.

(5,075 posts)I looked at my library catalog online and couldn't figure out which one was the first in the series.
I hardly ever read any fiction, I'm too easily distracted by the other side of my brain. This series sounds like it might interest me though.

(20,176 posts)Cheaper still probably if you know of a used book store.
Not the nicely-bound larger sized new trade-paperback editions (those are closer to $15)
I'm guessing you do actually know the difference between mass-market paperback and trade-paperback but rather post once than come back later to explain it if someone doesn't. Trade-paperbacks are higher-quality, larger and usually on nicer paper; mass-market are those 4"x6" 2"-thick novels on newsprint you used to see sold in supermarkets and drugstores.
Probably a better idea than waiting on the library as it's a very-thick novel, 15 people at 400pp. could take a while...that or do what I did with the most-recent hardcover...go to Target and read it 6 pages at a time "browsing" until the store-detective caught on.
