Salt Lake City could elect its first openly gay mayor.

We've got a potential duzy of a primary heating up here in SLC between two Democrats - current mayor Ralph Becker and Jackie Biskupski, who was Utah's first openly gay member of the legislature.

Becker is running for a third term and while leads in the polls, only garners 33% of primary support. There will be a general later this year after the summer primary and Biskupski, who won the endorsement of Jim Dabakis, who is an openly gay member of the Utah Senate, very well could make it to the general election if polls are to be believed at this point.

I like Becker but I think it's time for fresh blood and would love the optics of having Salt Lake City, the world headquarters of the LDS Church, being led by a gay woman.

The fact Jackie rocks as a person, and a candidate, only makes it easier to vote for her.

I'd bet she wouldn't be Salt Lake City's first gay mayor. It would crack me up if she said that in a debate.

It's great when we get a win/win situation!

That said, while SLC is a Democratic stronghold, it would be amazing if an LGBT person was elected mayor of the capital city of the most Republican state in the US.
