Police in Sicily have arrested 15 men suspected of throwing about a dozen Christians from a migrant boat in the Mediterranean. Survivors had informed police of the killings.
Police in the Sicilian capital Palermo said on Thursday they had arrested 15 Muslim men from the Ivory Coast, Mali and Senegal on charges of throwing the group of Christians from a migrant boat in the Mediterranean. All the Christians are believed to have drowned.
"The motive for the resentment was traced to their faiths," police said. "Twelve people are said to have drowned in the waters of the Mediterranean, all of them Nigerian and Ghanaian."
The 15 were charged with multiple homicide motivated by religious hatred. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement that it had received reports of "a fight between different groups - maybe for religious reasons..."

(16,423 posts)But I get your point.
Step 1: We need one big island that nobody cares about.
Step 2: We put all religious extremists (and I am very generous with that term) on that island where they can duke it out who has the correct religion.
Step 3: There is no step 3.
As much as religion gives people hope, there is nothing in moral terms that couldn't be done with humanist arguments. Religion was useful as a socially stabilizing force for the early civilizations, becuse it was a quick&dirty method to keep stupid people in check. But nowadays people are so informed that we no longer need a quick&dirty method. We can actually examine and discuss issues and look for a real solution.
Religion has its upsides, but it has so many bad side-effects that it nowadays causes more trouble than it's worth.
Just imagine a world without religion:
islamic terrorism, gone
most wars in Africa, gone
muslim rebels in Southeast Asia, gone
most wars in the Middle-East, gone
the conflict between India and Pakistan, gone
most problems in Israel, gone
rabid patriotism in USA and Russia, down to a healthy level

Syria is already fucked so might as well keep the battle right there. Israel can send all their asshole fundies...
The only weapons that can be used are whatever a single person can carry. Then have at it! Winner gets a shithole piece of land in the middle of the desert and they will be immediately under sanctions

(82,383 posts)and the article below that is about migrant boats sinking.
Sound miserable and dangerous enough without adding religious conflict.
And where they are going there are going to be a lot of Christians. Article doesn't say how it came about, as it's hard to believe there is not more to it than 15 Muslim men just deciding to kill people for being Christians.

These are the over-crowded, dangerous conditions on most boats that leave Libya.
Expect many more capsizing and mass drownings this summer.

(82,383 posts)People on the boat may not have known each other - hopefully some of the Muslims step up and say what they saw.
