The Answer Isnt Socialism; Its Capitalism that Better Spreads the Benefits of the Productivity Revolution
SUNDAY, MAY 6, 2012
Francois Hollandes victory doesnt and shouldnt mean a movement toward socialism in Europe or elsewhere. Socialism isnt the answer to the basic problem haunting all rich nations.
...
We dont need socialism. We need a capitalism that works for the vast majority. The productivity revolution should be making our lives better not poorer and more insecure. And it will do that when we have the political will to spread its benefits.
Hell, I thought he had a lot more understanding of what socialism means in Europe? Why does he fear a system where the state provides a decent safety net and tries to provide for its citizens (though it is far from perfect).
I dont disagree with his analysis of the problems in the West, but his paper suggests he has no idea what the left wing parties in Europe stand for (not far from what he is asking for). This is something I would expect from the freepers, but not from him.

(51,907 posts)A commitment to invest in public goods. Is there anyone anywhere (except for a few fringies) who thinks that the government should be making shoes instead of building the infrastructure that makes making and selling shoes and other things possible? Hoping Hollande doesn't knuckle under to the banksters.

(25,023 posts)There is not nor has there ever been a capitalism that works for the vast majority of people because it is a system designed from the root to benefit the few at the expense of the many.
Technological advances and increasing efficiencies will make broadly beneficial capitalism even more unworkable as time marches on and our current lifestyle (and life) funding set up leaves more and more behind.

(32,342 posts)That's why the Democratic Party is such a melange of economic philosophies. Liberalism is a catch-all phrase for the left in the US, but it was a philosophy that originally supported capitalism over feudalism.

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard." -- H. L. Mencken.
See how well socialism works when there is a lack of "other people's money" to redistribute.

Watching the race between Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande reminds me of watching the race between Barack Obama and Willard Romney...

(8,556 posts)To the extent there will be a RW narrative about this, my guess is that it will be:
'Europe is a mess and the election results in Greece and France show this. The EU is in a hole and they don't know how to get out - the only thing the people there know for sure is that they don't want to have to pay for it. (insert inaccurate Obama comparison).'

(1,068 posts)France should IMMEDIATELY freeze the accounts of everyone over a million dollars UNTIL they get their mandatory 75% rates in place. There are reports that the rich are leaving, along with their ill-gotten fortunes from the productive sweat of the poor, to London.
