This GOP Presidential Hopeful Thinks LGBT and Women’s Rights Are a “Distraction”

Let’s make a deal. I’ll tell you which presidential candidate I’m talking about if you promise to keep reading after you see his name. I swear, there’s a point to all this. Promise? No crossing your fingers.

Ready? OK, it’s George Pataki.

Remember, you promised.

snip

Then he calls abortion and gay rights “a distraction.” That’s the line I want you think about for a moment.

Pataki2I want you to imagine a gay couple in love, together for years, who want to get married but whose state still has a law on the books telling them they can’t, because they’re still second-class citizens.
Now picture George Pataki telling them if they try to fight for their right to marry, they’re distracting the nation in our fight against terror.

I want you to imagine a pregnant, scared teenager worried her life is essentially over. Her dreams of college and a career might be gone forever, because her state passed a law saying she can’t end her pregnancy unless her conservative parents agree to let her. Now imagine George Pataki telling that young woman her right to decide her own fate is a distraction keeping us from growing the economy.

The fight for a woman’s right to decide when and how she has kids isn’t a distraction. The fight for LGBT people to have full inclusion in our rights as citizens isn’t a distraction. These are critical battles about the fundamental values that define us as a nation.

and it's not anyone that I would choose to align with even if I had no other choice in this world.

I also think it's precious and adorable that the same ones calling social issues "distractions" here are also the same ones crowing about how they are finding so much common ground with Republicans on Discussionist.

You'd think the would have happened by now, that the penny would have dropped and they'd wake up and realize exactly what this all means, but that would be ascribing way too much intelligence (not to mention progressive beliefs and behavior) to those who have made it abundantly clear that they are not blessed with even the tiniest most miniscule trace of awareness.

Apparently the only time one should reach out to Republicans is when you are minimizing the rights of about 60% of your population.

I have seen LGBT rights referred to as "ponies", "special rights", and just recently, our rights were called "the liberal G spot". I have seen similar attitudes in regards to women's issues, particularly, reproductive rights. I can't say I am surprised when it comes from the right; but I am profoundly disappointed when it comes from the left.

I have seen all that here too, well I missed this one "the liberal G spot". I have to say it hurts when it comes from a Democrat. I find it sad when so many Progressives never come on threads about social issues. Our rights are being taken away from us left and right, in many ways that is killing us, yet we are ignored.

from the important business of giving more tax breaks to the obscenely rich and increasing spending on an already bloated war machine.

To do this we must cut spending on everything and everyone else and put gays, blacks, women, and especially gay black women back in their place.

Just saying.

how issues that affect half of the population can be seen as a "distraction" escapes me.

I thought, now this is one which I have not heard the crazies coming out of his mouth. I began to look around to prepare my defenses for Hillary to use in running plays and what happened. Thanks to she she who provided this ammo I can now add Pataki's name to the other crazies such as Paul, Mario, Cruz, Michele, Perry, Santorum, Walker, Christie, Carley and Bush. Yep we have a clown car.
