The voices Hillary Clinton didn’t hear

MAUMEE, Ohio — The lady in the dark Jackie Onassis glasses, the star of this week’s worthy-of-Hollywood video in which she improbably cast herself as the champion of everyday Americans, really blew it when she walked out of the Chipotle here Monday.

Incredibly, there happened to be an everyday American right there, right behind the counter when Hillary Rodham Clinton collected her chicken burrito bowl and iced tea, then jumped back on Interstate 80 bound for Iowa and some stunning stagecraft.

“If that was me and I was running for president, I’d be out there talking to people,” Charles Wright told me after his staff served me a delicious lunch at that Chipotle on Wednesday. “I would assume she would not be running around incognito. I’d like to know her plan to get the economy firmly back on track. I mean, what is it?

“I would like her to be honest with me.”

But Hillary had no time for Wright. She didn’t know the 29-year-old was born in California, moved here in 1999, took classes at the University of Toledo, works 50 hours a week, and now manages more than 30 people for a restaurant chain. He will gladly talk your ear off.

Wright's concerns clearly don't fit into a 15-second clip.

...just ignore the fact that she's been in politics for decades and already ran a national campaign. There are good and valid reasons to oppose her, but making this swipe at her for not talking to every voter who has a gripe or opinion this early in the campaign is opportunistic bullcrap. This is the best Boston Globe could come up with for their front page? She didn't talk to the staff about national policy while picking up lunch?

Where's their story on Rubio's visit to Chipotle on the 15th??

Did he take time to discuss his health plan in Florida with the workers there which now covers a total of 80 people?

I swear some people can come up with the stupidest things to pick on. It doesn't make Hillary look bad, it makes reasonable people think the writer is weak on substance.

Plus, free press is better than paid publicity. Way better.

If the candidate is there at the restaurant, you just announced and you're there, make a point of asking, "How are ya?" After a moment or two, if it's the right person, the candidate might add: "I wanna be your champion. Can I count on your support?"

Either way, it goes a long way toward showing the candidate cares. In 2004, John Kerry spoke before the Detroit Economic Club. After a 45-minute directionless speech, one in which he started by saying he was going to make 5-points about getting US manufacturing back, then looked over my notes to see four were pointless, omitted or misplaced, the Senator finished his remarks, got off the podium, turned around and tried to walk out. I was one of the few people who approached him to shake his hand and say, "You need some help with the speechwriting." He just left. Looking back, I think he was not feeling well that day.
