There is an archaic idiom of biblical origin from Jesus Christs famous Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 7:15 warning the people to Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheeps clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Today the saying, beware of a wolf in sheeps clothing, is apropos of many Republicans posing as decent human beings pretending to care about the American people. During biblical times, wolves were regarded as greedy and malevolent predators that were a threat to the innocent, and a great number of Americans are gravitating toward a greedy malevolent politician for a variety of reasons and curiously, many are so-called progressives, liberals, and young people wary of supporting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in her presidential bid.
What is sickening is that the above stated group looking for a new champion in Kentucky libertarian Rand Paul are allegedly Americans with a semblance of intelligence and possess the ability to read, research, and comprehend that there is no such thing as a beneficent libertarian. In fact, the same people that apparently hate the libertarian Koch brothers are looking on Rand Paul as a decent human being; a monumental error one expects moronic Republicans to make, but not anyone on the left.
Americans should make no mistake that Rand Paul is any different whatsoever than the most vile Koch Republican or evangelical teabagger; except for his ability to convince idiots that he cares about any American other than the very rich, the very war-happy, and the very religious. In fact, if anyone took the time to give even a cursory look at Rand Pauls past statements and current positions, they would discover that he hates all Americans nearly as much as he hates the government he seeks to lead; one he wants to take apart on the same level as his libertarian cohorts the Koch brothers.

(27,461 posts)yes Rand is trying to fool liberals, and Democrats such as the ones that write at politicususa.com make it easier for him. They make it look like Democrats are full of crap, and also that they despise progressives.

(6,336 posts)It seems like Rand has a skill that the others on his side lack. It feels like he knows the broader, general audience better. He has figured out how to pander to the base in more private, coded conversations while spouting a broader message more publicly.
What worries me is the number of younger people (20-mid 30's) who view his isolationism as a strength. And quite frankly, I think a lot of us here agree with the sentiment that we should stop pouring money into the M-I-C at the expense of caring for many of the social needs that exist at home. But I also think most of us here can see the whole cloth that is Rand - not just the one position that we might agree on. And that whole cloth is scary scary chit.
And to us Ohioans, he's almost a local boy and he's been working the local Northern Kentucky circuit pretty hard.
Of all the right candidates, this is the guy that scares the chit out of me because he hides his wolf so much better than the others.
I still think he's very beatable in the general with the right candidate but still, scary guy.

(1,980 posts)There's a disconnect between the national parties and the American people. When a problem arises, we get a lot of hand-waving and platitudes from the elected class, their patrons, and the minions in the think thanks, but we don't ever get something concrete. Persistent unemployment? Mumble something about worker retraining or evil regulations (depending on your "official" political slant) and yammer on about greatest something or other. The NSA clearly exceeding constitutionally permissible surveillance (which is really defined by the attitude of the population, not nine morons in cheap robes)? Invoke the terrorists, mumble about freedom, and then lie through your teeth about your proposed "fixes." These are reasons why Rand has a chance.
Rand relies on most people not having the time or energy to figure out that he's full of it. I remember his supposed fourth amendment bill from a couple of years ago and that was a masterpiece of deception if you don't understand the basics of how courts work. In short, Rand named his bill something like "Fourth Amendment Restoration Act" and claimed it would prevent the federal government from spying on Americans. It did no such thing. It told the federal courts how they were to interpret the law, which never works. Rand either had complete idiots working in his office, which is possible, or he's a completely cynical bastard who put up a law he knew would never pass constitutional muster. Congress can make the law, define the law, and set its jurisdiction, but it can't tell the court how to interpret the law. He had to know that if it passed, it'd be overturned. I imagine the plan in that case would be to crow about how the courts are against freedumb and how only good, old Rand is for it. That's the kind of scumbag we see in old Rand.

(32,139 posts)Corporate Democrats are obsessed with Libertarian-leaning Republicans only because they expose those Democrats' betrayal of voters on the issues they should own. The only reason any Libertarians get attention at all is because they say some of the right things re: reining in warmongering, curbing the drug wars, and stopping the outrageous surveillance/militarized police state. People do NOT like their willingness to scrap social programs and gut Social Security.
All Democrats would have to do is re-embrace the policies they were *supposed* to stand for all along. Stop pandering to the corporate One Percent with private prisons and draconian drug policies and a fascistic surveillance state. Stop being apologists for torture. Stop the outrageous corporate war on marijuana and marijuana users. Be the party that not only ends the spying and the warmongering and the outrageous drug wars for profit, but also reins in Wall Street, restores our Constitution, rejects predatory trade deals, reduces inequality, and STRENGTHENS social safety nets.
Those who whine about Libertarians while excusing the corporate sellout of our own party are part of the problem. Third Way Democrats would not have to worry about Libertarian Republicans at all if they would crawl out of their corporate Masters' pockets for long enough to own the issues they SHOULD own.
I think there's a good chance the plan of corporatists on both sides of the aisle is to run Rand Paul to the left of Hillary in 2016 in order to get a Republican in office.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=5432640
Nearly eight years of predatory expansion of Bush-era policies under a Democratic president have opened too many eyes to the fact that we're an oligarchy now and that policy doesn't change no matter which party is elected. Corporatists need a Republican in office for a while so that Democrats can pretend to be against these policies again. Then maybe people will be fooled into believing that we still really do have a democracy, and all they need to do next time is vote for the corporate Democrats again, and everything will be just fine.

(85 posts)... but also the objective for any of these Republicans is force voters into becoming apathetic to the voting process. Rand Paul probably knows he has little chance, as his dad did... but the objective is to make voters think there's either no difference between the two parties or that the Paul's are somehow not part of Washington and can siphon votes away from the Democrat. They know well enough that the less people vote, the better chances a Republican wins. Rand's ultimate objective may be to become President, but if can't get past the primaries, at least he can support this idea that Bush/Clinton dynasties are bad and maybe voters will stay home.
I have a facebook friend who is all about fucking Ayn Rand and the Pauls...she constantly fills my news feed with stupid shit from Reason or any article that suggests "both sides do it, see!!" She also attends Liberty functions and meetings in her state, and I'm convinced they make my friends into operatives on the internet. I can't see any other reason for her spamming FB like that if she wasn't being paid and or told to do so.
This is an old tactic of the John Birch Society and the Heritage Foundation.
