Press Release
WASHINGTON The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) released broad principles today to establish standards for U.S. trade policy that put workers first, balance trade deficits, and improve labor and environmental protections around the world. The Congressional Progressive Caucus believes it is possible to negotiate a trade agreement that doesnt replicate the mistakes of the past, and instead creates a new model for trade, promoting balanced growth for the global economy.
Principles for Trade: A Model for Global Progress

The Congressional Progressive Caucus believes the following principles can ensure fairer trade agreements by prioritizing middle class families and removing special protections and privileges for corporations:

Amendment VII
In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.
This is just a tiny part of the law that protects the legal and economic rights of American citizens when we buy, sell, and participate in commercial transactions.
The trade agreements that create trade courts do not guarantee a trial by jury or protect the other rights of American citizens or our nation when it comes to commercial disputes or the resolution of conflicts between our laws, our democratically and constitutionally established laws, and the interests of corporations.
These trade agreements are incompatible with our laws and our Constitution for many reasons, and the establishment of courts that deprive Americans of fundamental rights is one of those reasons.
No to the TPP.
