Gloomy Jon Stewart ‘not getting the same satisfaction’ from ‘Daily Show’

He came, they laughed, and now he’s ready to move on.

That was the takeaway from soon-to-be-former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, who waxed eloquent about the little-seen film he directed and saying goodbye to satirical news in two conversations with the Guardian’s Hadley Freeman published this weekend.

So: Why is he going?

“Honestly, it was a combination of the limitations of my brain and a format that is geared towards following an increasingly redundant process, which is our political process,” the comedian told Freeman. “I was just thinking, ‘Are there other ways to skin this cat?'”

The cat Stewart is trying to skin: democracy.

“Whether it’s standup, the show, books or films,” Stewart said, “I consider all this just different vehicles to continue a conversation about what it means to be a democratic nation, and to have it written into the constitution that all men are created equal – but to live with that for 100 years with slaves. How do those contradictions play themselves out? And how do we honestly assess our failings and move forward with integrity?”
