Bernie Sanders: Rahm Emanuel's Re-Election Is Proof Citizens United Decision Stinks

The Huffington Post | By Joseph Erbentraut Posted 4/8/15

In an interview with HuffPost Live Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) lamented the result of Chicago’s mayoral election following the tense, expensive runoff between Rahm Emanuel and challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.

Sanders said he supported Cook County Commissioner Garcia because “he had put together a strong coalition of working-class people, blacks and whites and Hispanics, and that is what we need to do all over this country.”

“So the lesson of Chicago is, you know, big money put a lot of money into Rahm Emanuel. We’re seeing this all over the country,” Sanders continued, “and unless we overturn this disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision, I worry about the future of American democracy.”

I thought when Bernie endorced even incumbency wouldn't help him. I think if Bernie went to Chicago that may have helped.

would be a game changer in a Chicago mayoral campaign...

I think Rahm bringing around the guy who sits in the Oval Office probably had just a tad more cache.

But if Senator Sanders were to go to Chicago the election at least may have been competitive.

Very little name recognition. How would he have made the race any more competitive by going to Chicago?

I haven't gotten into the candidate conversation, but don't want us to blow this election. This is do or die...2016...and it's not going to likely be our first pick. Maybe, and I'm ALL for a robust Primary.

But we can start...Bernie and Elizabeth give me hope...they have gotten national attention and are truly Progressive and give us some down-ticket energy.

Does that make sense?

those that receive the money on a quid pro quo basis are equally as bad. The wealthy handed Rahm the victory. He is beholden to them and not the people.

...had never heard of Chuy Garcia, but I voted for him. Karen Lewis was enormously popular. Chuy Garcia was the winner of the "not-Rahm" primary. Based on Chuy's 44%, Karen Lewis would have crushed Rahm.

if even Bernie Sanders can't say it straight, that our democracy is already not functioning, well, that is much more a demonstration of the effect of Citizen's United than any farce of an election...when third parties are allowed to participate in televised debates, then maybe I'll believe we have a functioning democracy!
