Dan Savage Mocks GOP Presidential Hopefuls For Their 'Imaginary Hypothetical Gay Friends'

http://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/thomasalberts/dan_savage_questions_the_reality_of_republicans_often_referenced_gay_friends

When planning a wedding, no matter what kind of wedding it is, there is almost always a conflict that arises in every single case; whether or not to invite friends or family members that you know (or at least have a fairly good idea) will be opposed to the very marriage you're undertaking. Ultimately, whether that person or group of people is invited is up to the individual couple to decide. However, as marriage equality comes increasingly closer to full legal recognition across the country Republican presidential candidates are being pressed harder about how they would respond to the changing cultural landscape. MSNBC's Chris Hayes focused in on this issue with a segment that included an interview with syndicated columnist and gay rights activist Dan Savage.

The new en vogue question of the 2016 presidential campaign is whether or not a candidate who is opposed to same-sex marriage would still attend a wedding ceremony if invited. As Hayes pointed out in the interview, five presidential candidates or potential presidential candidates on the Republican side have been asked if they would attend a same-sex wedding ceremony. Senator Marco Rubio and former Governor of Texas Rick Perry have stated that they would attend despite their opposition. Former Senator Rick Santorum and Senator Ted Cruz have said they would not. Governor of Wisconsin Scott Walker claims that he has attended a reception. In any case, all five of these men have stated that they believe homosexuality, and these marriages, are wrong on some level....

Interestingly though, these Republican candidates have never been able to name any specific person included in the ranks of all these gay friends and family members they are constantly referencing. Nor has any gay or lesbian individual ever come forward to corroborate their claims or defend their positions.

“When the anti-gay bigots like Rick Santorum are challenged on their anti-gay bigotry, or Cruz or Huckabee, they always point to their imaginary hypothetical gay friends who might apparently invite them to a gay wedding,” Savage mocked.
