From what I am hearing, TPP will give Big Business/Multinational Corporations the ability to sue foreign governments over those governments' laws that hinder their abilities to do business/make insane amounts of money.
As a very small time Washington State pot grower it would enhance the hell out of my business if I can market my products in states the U.S. Government forbids me from selling to. Furthermore I am clearly being negatively impacted by my not being able to transport my products across state lines to Colorado. If 'Big Tobacco' can sue Uruguay: http://action.sumofus.org/a/uruguay-philip-morris/? over theoretical losses to their business, why can't 'Little Pot' do the same thing to the US Government?

(14,733 posts)then you'd be free to sue each and every government that signs onto the TPP for any laws they might have that limit your potential sales in their countries.

(34,845 posts)You wouldn't be able to sue another country unless that country erects barriers specifically designed to keep your business out. They can erect any other kind of barriers based on health, environment, anything they term 'fairness', etc., so long as those laws are applied equitably to 'home-grown' businesses as well as to foreign businesses.
It's like outlawing egregious tariffs, which only lead to trade wars.
I don't understand why anyone sees this part of the agreement in such a ludicrous light.

The lyrics to the songbird's melodious trill go something like this:

(10,558 posts)Everyone who markets a product might share a similar secret desire for their product. I will confess that I created a strain of Pot that I would like to see marketed nationally, maybe even worldwide. Like any parent, I get it that I might be a little biased with my hopes for that strain's future.
