Collectively, we are God to this planet

We've been the dominent species on earth for a couple hundred thousand years.

There were less than a billion people on earth until around 1800. By 1960, we were 3 billion people. Today, we are 7 billion people. In a few decades we will be approaching 10 billion.

We were the dominent species prior to 1800.

Today, we are God to our planet. We're in a class of our own. Our actions affect every living thing on the planet. Yet, our planet is going through a period of mass extinction and global warming. To think we should not do anything is...

while there is of course no such thing as god there are those who help us from time to time from far away.

It is a fun hobby to play with for him and I admit I would LOVE to see a giant spaceship in the sky someday.

In fact we seem to be pretty ignorant and feckless. What we are is, as you say, the dominant species, and we will play that out according to our nature. It remains to be seen exactly what that nature is, but by this time it seems pretty clear.
