Nashville Couple Says Landlord Rejected Application Because They are Gay

http://www.fox17.com/news/features/top-stories/stories/Nashville-Couple-Says-Landlord-Rejected-Application-Because-They-are-Gay-119114.shtml

“Just because I'm gay and in a gay relationship that is a completely healthy loving, amazing relationship, I don't think that affects anybody else except for us,” said Horbal.

We contacted the East Nashville landlord. He tells FOX 17 he denied the couple, not because they’re gay, but because they filled out their applications incorrectly. The couple doesn't buy it.

They also don't like that State law doesn't protect them from discrimination. “It’s a government job to protect minorities,” said Horbal. “They're not doing their job.”

Tennessee is one of dozens of states where it’s legal for landlords to deny people housing because they're gay. Even under federal law, gays are not considered a protected class under the Fair Housing Act. However, since 2010. HUD has investigated complaints involving cases like Cannon’s and Horbal’s.

They have no protection because there isn't state or federal legislation to protect them. DemocratSinceBirth Apr 2015 #1
I'm actually a little surprised that Nashville doesn't have a local ordinance. KamaAina Apr 2015 #3

It's kind of purplish. Tennessee goes from blue Memphis east to oh-so-Red "Knox-vile" and environs, with NashVegas right in the middle.

It's still OK to discriminate against gay people in many places. This seems to offer great comfort to those who lost their opportunities to discriminate against people for other reasons. I guess they'll take it hard when, someday, we finally get sexual orientation added to the Fair Housing Act.
