Your Bra May Be Killing You Scientists Call For Boycott Of Komen
Boycott Komen Over Bra?
The problem with bras, according to medical anthropologists Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer, is that they restrict the flow of lymphatic fluid, thereby retaining toxins in the breast that have nowhere to go. They compare it to the feet and ankle swelling that occurs on long flights, because the lymphatic fluid pools in the lower extremities and isnt allowed to circulate.
Singer and Grismaijer, co-authors of Dressed To Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras, say that wearing a bra more than 12 hours a day dramatically increases the risk of getting breast cancer. A woman who wears a bra 24/7 is 125 times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who rarely or never wears a bra. Those who sleep in their bra, they found, have a 75% chance of developing breast cancer at some point in their lives.
Harvard did a study in 1991 that showed greatly increased incidence in breast cancer in those who wear bras over those who dont.
Sleeping Without Bra May Reduce Breast Cancer
Even limiting the wearing of tight bras can make a difference. Women who wear a bra more than 12 hours, but not to bed, have an one in seven risk of breast cancer, but wearing it less than 12 hours reduces her risk to one in 152, while cutting it out completely carries a one in 168 risk. Midwife Lisa Goldstein recommends that women take off the bra when they get home and massage the tissue that has been compressed to get the lymphatic fluids flowing properly.

This sure makes sense to me - fluid not circulating, etc.

(3,795 posts)I'll be sure to pass this information on to all of the women in my life.
Unfortunately, my sister is fighting a very, rare and aggressive form of breast cancer (stage IV) and she is very, very young (with 3 little ones).

(46,179 posts)I don't know about fluid retention; I sleep without a bra and don't wear one at home.
I know that smooshing them into containment and carrying all that weight around on those straps has negatively affected my back. I know that the constant inflamation of the thoracic area...40 years worth of constant, 24/7 inflammation, has had a negative effect on the quality of life.

(10,044 posts)Off with the damned thing any time it's not needed.
It's only needed with some clothing that is tailored to wear with a bra, the rest of the time it doesn't matter.
Even in winter with a heavy coat, I sometimes don't wear one out when I know I will not be taking the coat off.
I did switch to a larger bra for comfort, which means that slightly smaller cups are needed without the compression.

(50,566 posts)I hate underwires and don't wear them, but a nice supportive sports bra -- yes please. I'm somewhat "endowed" and I don't like going braless if I'm not in bed.

In addition, I usually get my bras from ebay because larger sizes are a lot cheaper there than they are in stores (typically).
After 44 years of bra wearing, measuring and trying every bra that might do a better job than the previous bra, I'm pretty sure I know my size. It's a 40 DDD.

(30,247 posts)The only women who could skip a bra altogether are those with small breasts. For some of us who are a C cup or above, a bra is a necessity. I wear one, but not in bed. I don't know many women who wear a bra to bed, it's uncomfortable.

(21,054 posts)...just a way some manufacturers found to make money when most women in their right minds would NOT be wearing a bra!

(30,247 posts)I just fail to see the need of wearing a bra to bed. I rather the girls be free for a few hours. LOL!!

(31,798 posts)Since I was a teenager - and you are right on cup size braless. I'm a full 34 D - I'm not going anywhere without the girls secured.

(30,247 posts)I wouldn't dream of walking around in public without a bra. Particularly at work, it would be too embarrassing. When one is well endowed, it's all about having good support. Flimsy bras won't do.
TMI time, I tend to wear nightgowns to bed (unless it's extremely cold, then I will wear a pair of pajamas) because I prefer to sleep with no panties. They tend to hike and give me a wedgie while I'm asleep.

(23,965 posts)Everyone should go commando at night to allow a bit of ventilation to body parts that can't air out any other time. It's healthier.
Beacool
(30,247 posts)That's why I wear nightgowns. If I wear pajamas I keep the panties on because IMO it's not hygienic otherwise.

(23,965 posts)Do men wear underpants under pajama pants, or is that just a woman thing? I know a lot of men just sleep in their underwear.

(21,054 posts)...right where the bottom of the bra hits on the left side.
I was in total pain yesterday even with a "soft" bra when I had to leave the house for an appointment. Bras are torture machines. There is no other way to explain it. I wish I did not have to wear one, but at my age and size, I have no choice.
Note: I sent this article to every woman on my email list and to hubbies and boyfriends with a request to pass the article along when I did not have an email addie to use for the female.
Great article...thanks!

(12,081 posts)thin can walk around with no bra, but I cannot because I am older and heavier? I think I am going to try an act of bravery, go to the store, buy me a camisole, and try walking around with just a camisole under my shirt.

(904 posts)Regardless of this article, I hate wearing a bra and do so out of necessity. I'd never go without but do sometimes wear a sports bra, especially in the summer. By about 7pm, I've had enough and whip it off so my "girls" can breathe!

(30,247 posts)The "girls" do need to breath.
Actually, I tolerate bras, but I despise nylon stockings with a passion. Stockings make my legs itch and they get a run almost immediately. I only wear them when I'm wearing a suit or when the outfit absolutely requires it. Which means that in public no one sees my legs until late spring. I wear dress pants to work until I can wear longer, flowing skirts and sandals in warm weather.

(146,281 posts)so a link to the source where you found it is essential. Below, several people have said that this is false and has been debunked. So, where did you find it?

(146,281 posts)where she found it, though. It appears to be all over the place on alternative health sites, blogs, and other places that don't bother to fact-check anything they post.
Since the poster hasn't bothered to return to the thread, though, I suppose it was just a dump-and-go post.
I'm certain it has been alerted on, but a jury left it to stink up the joint. Uff da!

(146,281 posts)People read it on some blog or health food website, and go around spreading false information wherever they go. Then, others have to point out that the information is worthless garbage, but posts like this one still get likes and are reposted again and again. I suppose it sells books for the authors, but it does much harm at the same time.
Scary false health articles piss me off.

(25,201 posts)Because I will look for anything to get underwires banned. (Even if it is BS) I'm not very big, but according to the bra industry I am. The bra industry seems to feel that the larger the bust the more they need underwires. (Gotta hold them up with metal that digs into them) - UGH

I guess people can post any damned fool thing they find on the Internet in GD, whether it is true or not.
The OP seems to have posted and gone somewhere else. I wouldn't expect a link, but the same story is posted all over the Internet, on all sorts of strange blogs and alternative health websites. Typical.

(21,675 posts)and being retired now, rarely wear one, never to bed (gah!), and when i have to, it's very lightweight and unconstructed. basically, NO support. i'm not small, so they sag, meh. they would after nursing 4 babies...doing what they were made for.

(23,965 posts)I once attended a "bra party" - can't remember what company. The young salesperson was somewhat unkempt and frowsy. When she was explaining how wonderful these bras were, and how well they fit, she said that they would initially fit so snugly that there could be bruising for a few days.
Bruising??!!!!! From your bra? No, thank you. It was not a selling point.
Count me among those who find underwires to be instruments of torture. I am on the slender side, and they rub right on my ribs, which hurts.
