ST. LOUIS It's 14.5 feet high, weighs 2,280 pounds and is yet another example of the seemingly unlimited financial resources to make St. Louis the country's chess capital.
Now you can add the World's Largest Chess Piece to the list of St. Louis monuments.
The king piece sits on a platform, a permanent fixture in the Central West End.
It's the latest effort of the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis to promote chess in the city, and was unveiled just after 9 a.m. on Monday.
This piece serves as a monument to the chess culture we are creating in St. Louis, said Mike Wilmering, spokesman for the club.

(15,374 posts)I'm a balloon twister, and the world's largest balloon twisting convention, Twist and Shout, is going to be held in St. Louis in 2013. As part of the convention, there are small, medium, and large sculpture competitions. I've entered the large a couple years ago in Chicago, and amongst the entries there was a 26 foot long dinosaur skeleton (the winner), a life-sized pink Cadillac, a "life-sized" scene from the movie, "Avatar," human sized cartoon ants, a 10 foot tall version of Humpty Dumpty falling off a wall, etc. I wonder if I - or someone else - made a 15 foot high balloon chess piece, would we take away the title... temporarily since it would eventually deflate.
