From June, when DU was talking about the Pope full time:
"Reuters) - More than 100 U.S. lawmakers and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights groups on Thursday urged the Obama administration to stop trade talks with Brunei unless the country revokes Islamic criminal laws they say jeopardize human rights.

Brunei, the first East Asian country to introduce Islamic criminal law, has announced laws that will impose fines or jail terms for offenses such as pregnancy outside marriage and failure to perform Friday prayers. The laws will ultimately punish sodomy and adultery with the death penalty, including by stoning.

One hundred nineteen members of the House of Representatives signed a letter urging Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman to shun Brunei in talks on a Pacific free trade zone unless the code is repealed."

Pride at Work's head discusses Brunei, women's groups
Windy City Times: On June 12, there were two separate letters sent out—one to President Obama and the other to Secretary of State John Kerry—from Pride at Work in conjunction with other national LGBT organizations. Has there been a response as of yet?

Jerame Davis: There is time until the final deal is made. The timeline is on the TPP now—thanks a lot to the work being done by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and a number of other labour unions and trade coalitions.

Originally, the coalitions goal was to have a Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal done by the end of 2013. It's now looking like they won't have one done before the end of 2014. Right now, Congress is stalled on the matter. In order for the deal to happen, the first thing that President Obama needs is what's called fast-track authority, which is Congress giving up their constitutional authority to negotiate trade deals and giving that to the president.

WCT: Is everyone for or against fast-track authority?

Jerame Davis: Everyone agrees on every side of the issue that the TPP wont happen without fast-track because the deal is too complicated for Congress to get in there and start meddling with. The proponents don't want that to happen because the 11 other countries that are involved don't want to negotiate with 535 members of Congress.

Just more of those 'gay social issues' that have nothing to do with economic issues.....

3. Obama must really be pissed about Wikileaks.

Because so many people are lining up against this 'harmless' and 'beneficial' trade agreement that supposedly provides 'strong protections' for workers and the environment.

That pesky freedom of speech!

Those pesky people writing letters to their Representatives and Senators!

If we could just undo the last vestiges of democracy in favor of a much cleaner and more efficient corporate state...

TPP is the worst thing to come down the pike since NAFTA, which cost this nation between 700,000 and 1,000,000 good middle class jobs, depending on the estimate, and dramatically increased our trade deficit. TPP is NAFTA on steroids, but the worst thing about it is how the expectation of profits can be used to overturn city plans, environmental rules, grass roots movements and just about anything that is good for the people.

Not only should TPP NOT be 'fast tracked,' the United States should under NO CIRCUMSTANCES enter into it.

I'm pretty disappointed in Obama and his support of this horrible agreement. He's done some pretty good things, but if this agreement goes through, his legacy will be one of job loss, environmental degradation and the elevation of the expectation of profits above democratic principles.

TPP is JUST WRONG!!!!

it really needs to include organizations IN OTHER COUNTRIES
that oppose the TPP.

Domestic opposition in New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Australia and elsewhere
is very strong.

Too many Americans act as if the rest of the world supports the
deal, and that we are alone.

That is not true at all - GET OUT THERE AND ORGANIZE INTERNATIONALLY !!!
