I would have gone with Ryan or Paul myself. Cruz is playing to a sort of populism - the "we hate intellectuals" crowd for example.

Big difference in embracing something and just speaking to something. Cruz is not a populist. Can't be defined as one. Cannot be made to look as if he even embraces it. "Playing to a sort of populism" is far different than embracing it.

Certainly he's no liberal and most of his policies will hurt the general folk that he's courting. So if you define populism in more terms of what issues they support.

On the other hand, Populism could also be seen as a style of campaigning, and in that sense he is a populist - he's very much telling people that Liberals and Washington are a bunch of arrogant snooty folk and he's with them against the Government evils.

I tend towards seeing populism as a style of campaigning myself; but i can totally see why it might be more of a political program (i.e. programs that will help the people, particularly the working and middle class).

It's like a template that's rolled out every four years.

Don't like (Corporate Democrat)? Enjoy President (Prominent Right-Wing Loon).

With all that corporate money, you'd think they could at least come up with some more original advertising.
