Speaking up at a news conference he is holding with the Japanese Ambassador, when asked by the press corps about Baltimore he let loose with an acknowledgement that this is a long standing problem, that it has been going on for a very long time, we have bad corrupt politicians, and business leaders, and police officers. That we not only have to help the city now to regain its footing but we have to collectively help with education, jobs, support for the bitterly poor and not just hold open pipe lines from schools to prisons for young folks without hope.
And that it takes a whole lot more than just an occasional news reporter task force. If we really want to participate in solving these deep rooted problems of inequality we all have to recognize our parts in them and pull together to solve them
I'm paraphrasing.
I watched his frustration and was happy and of course not surprised to see him have such a clear perception of the vastness of the problems.
Then, of course, come the presently seeming insurmountable problems and pushbacks about doing the right things.

(13,685 posts)I wished he'd really let loose. The country needs to hear the hard, hard Truth.
Hope we see some Change from him. But this is better than nothing, I suppose.

(22,380 posts)The dreadful small mindedness and lack of focus on what is important and real is mostly shown in how the Republican opposition forcibly dehumanizes us.
We can't just eat chipotle (whatever that is???) and carve pants suits out of logs while sitting on the steps of a rural grocery store (I digress)
we can't really say all of what is on our mind and what we grapple with when we are in power for fear of being chopped to bits over trivial aspects of what we put forth.
I. SO. HATE. IT
it just slices the humanity out of us

(13,685 posts)You are real people. If you could just learn to be a faker and kiss everyone's ass then you too could be a leader!!
Then you could just slide by and wave as the rest of the world crumbles. That's how most of the people handle eating their fast food and fast cars as they pretend to be fast and furious. <grin>

(7,393 posts)That's always an option. I'd prefer that our politicians debated the issue, but that doesn't stop me from informing myself. Just a thought.

(7,393 posts)Now I will say I am against the TPP, BUT the idea is that it would create more enforceable rules around currency manipulation that is currently occurring in Asian markets. Currency manipulation distorts trade flows by artificially lowering the cost of U.S. imports and raising the cost of U.S. exports, and that causes trade deficits and lost jobs in the country or countries that do not manipulate the currency.
If I thought they would actually enforce sections of any trade agreement that would stop this currency manipulation, I might be more inclined to be supportive as a voter. But I THINK that is one of the places Obama is coming from on the issue.
I really wish we could jettison the "it's secret" bullshit and actually have a public debate about this by our politicians. Enough is known to have that debate.
