Support Workers!

Tomorrow, all the work will be done at my mother-in-laws house. It's having its first open house on Saturday. My wife's mom moved into assisted living about six months ago, and we've been getting ready to sell it. I've been thinking about all of the people who have worked on the job. Here's a list:

6 people from Rose' s Daughters, a non profit that helps elders deal with a life-long accumulation of stuff. They sort, pack and get stuff to other non profits who distribute it to those in need.

2 guys with an independent moving company. They took piles of stuff to storage, and other piles for donation.

Two independent trash haulers and recyclers. They hauled off everything else to a warehouse, where other workers will sort it to keep as much as possible out of the landfill.

2 men from Keys 4 Kids, a non-profit that picks up good pianos and distributes them free to piano students who don't own pianos. We paid for moving costs.

2 guys from a different moving company, who moved some historic furniture that will go to a historical museum. It's in storage for now.

Two Spanish-speaking carpet layers from a local carpet company. They are independent contractors. They did a superb job of installing 2400 square. ft. of carpet. I got to use my Spanish, to their surprise.

2 painters and general handyman, who painted every interior surface, built new kitchen counters and fixed everything that needed fixing, over six days.

A hardworking cleaning worker, who found and removed grime and dirt from every corner and pane of glass. She was amazing!

Our real estate agent, who will get paid when the house is sold.

We have written checks to pay every one of those people, not one of whom works for a large company. They are all independent contractors. Every one of them.

We helped put them to work. They all did a great job. Thanks to each of them!

My biggest problem is finding someone reliable who won't screw me over.

I especially like the idea of Rose's Daughters...fantastic service!

Good luck on the sale!

We found Rose's Daughters on the Internet, and they lined up the movers and trash haulers. The rest came from referrals from friends, our real estate agent and others.
