Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsBernie hasn't just stood up for working people: He's been a champion for Civil Rights
since long before he entered politics. Yes, a champion:
While a student in 1963, Sanders was active in the Civil Rights Movement, becoming a student organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.[14] He was one of several thousand students who traveled on buses to Washington, D.C., for the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
And he never wavered, not as Mayor for 8 years and not in His U.S. House and Senate careers. He has a 93% rating from the NAACP on Civil and Voting Rights.
Bernie is staunchly pro-choice. He has a 100% rating from NARAL
He's been staunchly pro-LGBT rights for decades. He has a 100% rating on those issues from the Human Rights Campaign.
He's against the encroaching surveillance state.
He voted against authorization for war under BOTH Bushes.
He co-founded the Progressive Caucus.
He's been a champion for Veterans and has been recognized for that work many times by Veteran organizations.
He isn't rich. Oh, he's comfortably off, but he has not gotten rich in his 25 years in Congress.
He doesn't back down from a fight, but he has found common ground with republicans on such as issues as Veterans' Affairs.
His environmental record? As good as his record on the above listed issues.
Bernie has been consistent on all these issues for his almost 35 years in public office. He's made his mistakes-or at least what I consider mistakes- but on the whole he has a stellar record.
And He won't back down.

(32,139 posts)Unlike neoliberal corporate politicians, he really stands up for women and minorities. He doesn't USE important civil rights issues as a wedge to blackmail people into voting for exploitative economic policies. He really believes in the welfare of marginalized groups, and he is consistent about it. He doesn't follow the polls, and he doesn't have to "evolve" on important issues. Unlike the agenda of corporate neoliberals, his overall agenda won't crush minorities into even more grinding oppression:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=edit&forum=1002&thread=6227977&pid=6228165
Neoliberals exploit women and minorities. They drive them into grinding poverty and despair, and they murder them. Austerity and looting hurt all human beings, but they harm marginalized groups including women and minorities most of all.
Probably the *most* revolting, dishonest lie of Third Way politicians is their shameless, outrageous claim to be the ones who *especially* care about poor people and women and minorities....even while they are aggressively and relentlessly dismantling the very democratic systems that allow minority groups to be empowered. The growth of authoritarianism and rampant inequality, and the destruction of democratic protections for the people, are NEVER compatible with protection of civil rights for minorities. Look at history, for god's sake. Look at the ACTUAL results of policy.
Hillary stands for the malignant corporatism that is, quite literally, dismantling our Bill of Rights, implementing mass surveillance, criminalizing investigative journalism and whistleblowing, looting the masses into poverty, and protecting a criminal, warmongering elite. Her "trade agreements" are antidemocratic and fascistic at their core, because they are *designed* to allow predatory corporations to override our ability to use our own democratic systems to defend ourselves against predatory corporatism.
Predatory corporatism harms all of us, but it ravages disadvantaged groups most of all.

The truth is that women and minorities can't afford more corporatism and are already dying because of it. The effects of *continued* corporate warfare on this nation and other nations will be a disaster for all human beings, but *especially* women and minorities.
It's all a viciously cynical rhetorical game, and the corporate propaganda doesn't fly anymore. The Third Way will not protect values of racial *or* gender equality by supporting candidates whose policies are dismantling the very economic and democratic systems that make it possible for women and minorities to be empowered. They certainly won't do it with policies like Obama's and Hillary's that protect bankers, starve schools and communities, grow exploitative industries including private prisons, and militarize the hell out of police in marginalized communities.
If people think things are bad now, just wait until we see the status of women and minorities in this country when we are all working for Third World wages, Hillary's trade agreements have ramped up corporate power and the ability of predatory corporations to override our democratic laws and protections, and dissent in the new corporate America has been crushed.
Bernie Sanders is a real representative of the people, not a corporate predator funded by Wall Street and mouthing progressive words. It's about time.

I think you would see a surge in voter participation that would not only elect them but kick out a whole bunch of the GOP...and it could happen.
It could be our American spring in November.

(41,118 posts)and seniors. He reaches out to all, emphasizing the cares and welfare of working Americans and working families. In the last six months I'm glad to see him appearing more on MSM programs, and he will be traveling more now to reach out to groups and crowds in various states. Last year he made several stops on a tour in the South including speaking to Veterans groups.
If you haven't seen Bernie on THOM HARTMANN'S daily program, M-F, 12-3 PM, ET you might want to check it out. The program is based out of Wash., DC and can be viewed/heard on the FSTV (Free Speech TV) Channel carried on Dish and Direct TV, also live online at freespeech.org, and on some radio and cable carriers.
On Thom's Friday program, Bernie does the "BRUNCH WITH BERNIE" hour segment around 12-1, sometimes later. He occasionally switches days if his schedule changes and Thom lets viewers know when he can. You really get to know Bernie and his views from tuning in to the program.
In every appearance and session, and I've seen many, Bernie does his very best to thoughtfully answer questions and discuss issues and concerns brought up by callers from all over the US and of every background.
Senator Bernie Sanders is a great American and a great Senator. We need his efforts and genuine concern for this country and the people in these difficult times. I welcome his entrance into the 2016 Presidential race as a Candidate!

But it would be nice if he signed on.
