Nasty Wingnut Spoils Kindergarten Concert With Racist Ranting

Some nasty, malevolent wingnut took it on himself to spoil a kindergarten concert in Iowa by yelling "USA! English Only!" over and over when the concert was introduced first in English, and then by a Spanish translator to accommodate Spanish speaking toddlers and their parents.

This occurred last week at the local Performing Arts Center in Perry, Iowa, about 40 miles Northwest of Des Moines, during a concert by Perry Elementary School students. The incident was caught on a 12-second video and provided to the Perry News. The video shows:

An unidentified man being escorted out of an auditorium by security personnel, while he repeatedly chants, "USA, English only. USA, English only," and shakes his fist in the air.

The man responsible for the disruption reportedly started bellowing the chant when a translator began repeating the event host's opening remarks in Spanish.

I had something similar happen to me about 10 years ago. I had pulled my son (who has 2 moms - not married at the time, but we are now) out of a boy scout troop because the scoutmaster constantly ranted and raved at scout meetings about how all gay people were going to hell.

So about 3 months later my son had his 6th grade graduation ceremony (as did the son of the scoutmaster), which took place in the school auditorium. The RWNJ scoutmaster proceeds to come up to me before the ceremony started and scream at me in front of a bunch of other people. Nasty stuff about GLBT people, and what a horrible mother I was to take my kid out of scouts, etc.

I was calm and collected and told him I didn't tell him how to raise his kid, and he should mind his own business. But man, he caused such a scene. RWNJs are just assholes.

15. I hate the Scouts.

We wouldn't let our kids join that poisonous rightwing group. Even if your own particular troop isn't bad, you're still supporting the national organization. You did the right thing.

We recently went to an Eagle Scout ceremony for a family friend and it was worse than I imagined -- completely rightwing, jingoistic, religious -- yech. Gave me the creeps.

The scoutmaster's son (still a friend of my son) came out as gay in his last year of high school, and his dad was a complete jerk to him about it. His wife left him (over that, and other issues), and he and his son barely speak.

He did seem pitiful as he continued to chant on, alone, waving his rolled up program around as they led him away.

He obviously didn't get to hear the songs. I wonder if he was actually somebody's daddy (poor kid) or just a random nut who had absorbed too much RW poison about immigrants "taking over," and came there to make a public point.

Even in my mellow coastal California town, I remember some GOPers getting perturbed at the County for accepting reality and posting signage in both English and Spanish. That was 25 years ago -- one can only hope everyone's attitudes have matured, but I would not bet money on it.
