... since Americans are history impaired. W. could not have stolen the 2000 Selection if Nader did not make Gore's margin of victory razor thin by running his "Gore is the Same as Bush" campaign---which was heavily funded and supported by Republicans like Grover Norquist, a man who is NOT a progresive and by the MSM which never missed a chance to tell (Republican) voters that the better Nader did the worse Gore would do (so send Nader money, hint, hint, nudge, nudge).
Have fun fighting it out in the primary but what happens in the primary stays in the primary and Dems had better come together during the convention--or else.

(1,061 posts)Thast was not democracy in action, it was pre-determined. Tens of thousands of votes from democratic strongholds were never counted. The scant Nader votes didn't tilt the result. Had they voted for Gore, the office of Kathleen Harris would simply have ignored a few more Gore votes.

(1,061 posts)Jeb was governor - they weren't worried about the recount at that point. They hoped Gore would concede, which he did. Then he reversed himself after learning of all the BS that was going on in FL.
Jeb's people were in Harris' office all of election night, 'tallying' the votes as they came in.
The exit polls were right. All media outlets had it as going for Gore for hours, until it was obvious GWB needed FL to win. Then the race tightened, with Bush by a nose at the wire. It would have looked overly obvious if it became a Bush landslide off of votes from Broward county and other Dem strongholds.

What I remember is the final tally had Bush up by some 500-something votes. The SCOTUS ruled that a full recount could proceed, but they stuck with an already published deadline which meant there actually was no time for a recount that would affect the outcome because it favored Bush at that time.
I'm sure there are a lot of experts on that whole lawsuit here, but I'm going by memory from the main points from that time period.

(12,504 posts)what they actually got was a run, way too close to call. It took the Supreme Court to finally give the win to W. It should never have been that close...Nader made the difference.
Remember how sure Rove was over Mitten's win.....the incredulous look. Clearly he thought it was in the bag too. I am very sure that somewhere along the line his finagling, didn't pan out, and he hadn't been told that something went awry.
