All cops charged in Freddie Gray killing made bail lower than teen who smashed police car with cone

Jon Swaine @jonswaine
All 6 cops now in custody for Freddie Gray death. All have bail set lower than teen who smashed police car with cone http://gu.com/p/48xmc/stw

The 18-year-old pictured smashing a police car with a traffic cone, in one of the defining images of the Baltimore riots, is being held on half a million dollars’ bail and may face years in jail after his stepfather persuaded him to turn himself in to authorities.

Shaun King @ShaunKing
Allen Bullock, who TURNED HIMSELF IN for breaking these windows, has a $500,000 bail but the officers don't! WHAT?

Bail for Caesar Goodson, Alicia White, William Porter and Brian Rice had been set at $350,000 each. Edward Nero and Garrett Miller each had a bail of $250,000.

Shaun King @ShaunKing
Every single officer who murdered #FreddieGray is already out of jail after paying 10% of their already low bail.

Based I the idea that the person will show up on their court date or forfeit the money. Consideration is given based on the likelyhood that the defendant will come to their hearing.

Wouldn't the black officers have received a higher bail than the white officers?

Do you think the accused vandal's crime is deserving of such high bail? If so, why?

whose grandfather was a cop, and whose aunts and uncles are cop they should be shaking in their boots about a trial. Do I need to put the sarcasm thingee in my post or is it perfectly clear?

it's ridiculous.

Amendment VIII

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

Either or all could be released on no bail (including Bullock), it's not like they're a flight risk.

Next up... a GoFundMe legal defense page for either, any and all involved because you know it's coming.

in minneapolis, a 18yr who was a Sr in high school, who's mom called police because 3 teenagers came to their apartment to beat of Tania, ended up getting shot by police.. the 18 Tania was shot 3 times by police. She had a knife in her hand. She was not threatening the police, and there is conflicting stories if she was yelling I"m going to kill you to one of the girls.

anyhow. .she is in the hospital waiting to have a 2nd surgery and this girl who doesn't have a record.. was charged with attempting assault and the bail is 50,000.. we have to raise 5,000 so she doesn't go from the hospital to jail. It is sickening.

See, a black woman threatened police and she only had $10,000 in bail.

You should interpret my title line with a certain level of sarcasm, though how much I'm not sure.

27. White privilege in action
Sat May 2, 2015, 11:24 PM
May 2015

My issue is not that I think the bail amounts set for the police officers, ranging from 250K-350K, were too low. Those are significant bail amounts. But I think a half million dollars for what is essentially a vandalism charge is completely and utterly outrageous. How any judge can justify $500k bail for breaking the window of a police cruiser under Amendment VIII of the Constitution is beyond me. The 8th Amendment states:

"Excessive bail shall not be required, no excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

The practice of deliberately setting excessive bail amounts for African American defendants charged with relatively minor crimes -- amounts a judge knows full well they will be unable to meet -- while white defendants are treated in a manner more in line with the 8th Amendment, has its roots in the Jim Crow era. It should be abhorrent to every decent, fair-minded American. And it represents one of the many ways the justice system is biased against African Americans. Indeed, it is yet another example of the kind of 'white privilege' far too many white Americans remain blissfully -- and willfully -- ignorant of.

Bail is not intended to be punitive,e nor is it supposed to function as the state's opportunithy to make an example out of anyone.

28. He was on probation

He's lucky he got bail at all. MOST people who violate probation are immediately remanded without bail and made to serve out their entire original sentence. I've seen it more times than I can count.

Sucks for young Mr. Bullock, but he knew that this was a risk when he decided to get on top of a police car and mug for the cameras while he was on probation for a long string of previous convictions.
