It really helps society to lock this woman up and put her child in foster care...

2. If some "bad guy" tried to take my kids, I'd attempt to injure or kill that person to stop them.

And I'd have the law on my side. I think there needs to be an awfully high bar before the state is permitted to take someone's child away. And smoking marijuna in no way gets anywhere close to that bar. In a just world, this mother would have her child back, and shed financially brak the state of Kansas over her knee, even moreso than their submoron of a governor already has. Fuck drug warriors who destroy families.

4. But who's the bad guy in this case?

On one side, you have a woman and mother who didn't follow state law.

On the other side, you have an entire panoply of folks to choose from, folks who have carefully spread responsibility to multiple other agencies and employees: The legislators, federal, state, and local, the anti-drug teacher who told the kids false and misleading facts, the school who acted as primary interface with the family and was the primary snitch, the child welfare agencies, or the cops? (there likely are others).

The easiest target is the mother. Everyone else was acting under policy, with the possible exception of the anti-drug teacher who was apparently lying to the kids, though he or she was probably going from some kind of pre-approved script.
