» John Lang of Omaha was born with cerebral palsy, and his parents were told they might not have him for long.

Though people with CP today typically live from 30 to 70 years, Dan Lang said that in the mid-1960s, he and wife Carol were told that their son “was not supposed to live past 5 years of age.”

John turned 50 on Wednesday this week, and was feted last Saturday by 140 people at a birthday party at the VFW hall at 89th Street and Military Avenue.

Carol died a year and a half ago, but the family remembered her saying long ago that if John ever made it to 50, he deserved a big party.

He lived to be almost 70. We picked him up to take him with us to church or out to dinner every now and then. Most people in our town couldn't understand his way of speaking, but my sister and I could.

He lived independently for most of his adult life. I think it is remarkable considering he would have been born around 1940.

I'm glad Mr. Lang had a good celebration, I think he will have many more.
