Yes, an outfigher (ali) is often more interesting than a counter puncher.
I wanted Pacquiao to win as well, but Mayweathers job was to win the fight, not put on a good show.

(53,759 posts)Mayweather controlled the action and completely outsmarted Pacman.
He in no way scared of Pac's speed, in fact, he was visibly faster. Even the announcers mention that very thing.
He won at least 8 out of 12 rounds and took Pac out of his game. Pac couldn't rush and lung and catch the opponent like usual because Mayweather was was to elusive and fast for his typical moves.
Pac was frustrated at not being able to connect with his flurries like with other fighters.
He won four rounds but found out what it was to fight the top boxer in his class.
Mayweather won easily 118 to 110.

(5,764 posts)That might say something about the direction of our society and our culture, and why we are heading there. It's probably not a very useful characteristic for an advanced civilization.

(765 posts)gratuitous violence. People have been lining up to see others thrown to the lions, hanged, tortured, strung up on posts, and burned at the stake since society began. I don't get it. I do everything I can to avoid seeing anything violent, but there is a large percentage of people who relish it and will apparently even pay huge amounts of money to see it. It may be some sort of innate thing in many (but certainly not all) human beings. I hope it's just a side-effect of civilization, but I worry it could be a natural part of being human.
When I see a boxing match, all I think about is the fact that they are getting traumatic brain injuries and then I feel sympathy pain from seeing their swollen painful faces. It's horrible.

I agree, not an exciting match to watch, but that's what happens if a boxer thoroughly outboxes a puncher.
Manny wasn't nearly as aggressive as he should have been. He could have made it closer or even won if he had fought the way Duran fought in his first fight against Leonard.
alcibiades_mystery
(36,437 posts)Mayweather dominated the fight the same way he dominates every one of his fights: with superior boxing defense and counterpunching abilities. Manny did not look like a world class boxer against him. He looked like somebody flailing badly. That's because Mayweather is the superior boxer. He is undoubtedly the best boxer of his generation, and in the top 10 of all time. And people can complain that he "runs" or whatever, but that's because people want to see slugfests. Believe me, they're nice, I like them.
Ironically, though, Mayweather exposes the audience as much as he exposes his opponents.
Every time Mayweather wins, he's basically saying "You don't actually like boxing. You like street fights. I have a particular skill: I'm a boxer. Put a street fighter against me, and watch how they can't hit me. Watch how they flail and flail. I'm a boxer."
And he's right.
It wasn't even close. Unanimous decision, with Mayweather really winning 9 or 10 of the 12 rounds.

Mayweather is a better fighter than Manny Pacquiao. That was proved tonight without question.

It wasn't close.

Was Mayweather using a new strategy? No. Everyone in the world knows he is a defensive boxer and a counter-puncher. Manny has known that for years. He utterly failed to solve the puzzle. Many of Mayweather's previous opponents fought him more effectively than Manny Pacquiao. Manny gave up by the 10th round. He didn't even make a good show of trying to knock Mayweather out in the 11th and 12th, though he surely knew he was well behind in the cards.
Like I said, it wasn't even close. Manny tried, and failed rather miserably.

(99,710 posts)Joe Frazier had a one foot reach disadvantage against Muhammad Ali and still managed to win one of their three fights.
The three main criterions for judging a boxing match are ring generalship, effective aggression, and defense...Mayweather won in all three categories. Simply put Manny fought Money's fight...Every time Manny began to mount an offense Money either slithered away or tied him up.
My heart was with Manny but my head was with Money and just as in other aspects of life the head always wins.

(32,886 posts)Eight rounds for Mayweather and 4 for Pacquiao.
I agree about your analysis about technique and the audience. That's how you are supposed to box.
Every time Mayweather wins, he's basically saying "You don't actually like boxing. You like street fights. I have a particular skill: I'm a boxer. Put a street fighter against me, and watch how they can't hit me. Watch how they flail and flail. I'm a boxer."

alcibiades_mystery
(36,437 posts)You're right about that.
Both fighters were given the same rules last night. Both fighters have been operating under those rules since they started the sport 20-25 years ago. Mayweather is the better fighter given those rules. That much was obvious. Hell, by the 10th round, Pacquiao was so whipped and flummoxed that Mayweather started going on the offense against him. By the 12th round, he looked worse than many of Mayweather's other opponents, not the great hope for putting Mayweather down.
No judge gave Pac more than 4 rounds. Most observers probably consider that generous. I gave him 3, but leaned toward 2.
Same rules, and they haven't changed. Mayweather just has more skill within that rule context.

(6,241 posts)He would dodge and weave and block. I would swing for the fences. When I got too tired to defend myself, he would go nuts on me. He was faster I wouldn't have a chance at that point. It's a very smart way of winning. Use your opponent's style and mistakes against him. Nothing wrong with that at all.

But I didn't say his career was measured only by money. It was really off-topic, and spoke to the popular attitude of 'success' being measured by one's income, which is an element that I thought I saw in your post. I apologize if I was in error.

(36,437 posts)The whole reason the fight made so much money is that people thought Pac could be the one to really whip Mayweather. People wanted to see Mayweather on his ass, lights out. As soon as it became clear that Pac was as incapable of hitting Mayweather as anyone else, the whole thing evaporated. They'll never get the same hype. Mayweather will finish up his SHO contract and retire. The only speculation is who the next sap will be.

(99,710 posts)Mayweather reminds me of Ali a bit in the ring though the former is much more technically sound while the latter was much more athletic, kind of like Larry and Ali...
Money used some of Ali's tricks from Zaire last night when he kept tying up Pacquiao whenever he tried to mount an attack and literally putting him in a headlock a time or two...
A lot of boxing is what the referees will let you get away with...
The OP mentioned Ali-Frazier...Frazier won the first fight because Ali basically fought Joe's fight or was forced to fight Joe's fight. Their second match actually reminded me of last night's affair...Ali basically danced around Joe, pot shotting him, and tying Joe up whenever he managed to get inside. Ali won a comfortable decision and came out unscathed. Their third fight was a war because it was mostly a flat footed fight fought in the center of the ring.

Mayweather is attempting to do for the Entire Sport of Boxing what Hulk Hogan did for the WWE - Turn it into a Non-Sport form of Entertainment.
And he is sincerely paying the price for it today. All over social media he is the MOST HATED MAN IN BOXING today - Bar None. Folks who betted on Mayweather are forgiving the debt - Don't even want to collect on such a "Staged Event" as what was last night.
And YES - MAYWEATHER PRODUCTIONS made a huge sum of money
But Mayweather himself was "Boo-ed" out of the arena
DefenseLawyer
(11,101 posts)Have you ever watched boxing before? Mayweather was booed walking in. He's the villain. He's always booed. The crowd booed because they were a pro Pacquiao crowd not because of the way Floyd fought. He did what any knowledgeable fan would have expected from him. As far as what "fans" are saying I the Internet, I would suggest that having a Twitter account does not a boxing expert make. Was it the fight of the century? No. But that was mostly because pacquiao was slow and heavier that he's ever been. It's laughable that any true Mayweather fans were disappointed in his fight. He fought the way he's always fought. He's a counterpuncher not a knockout artist.

(99,710 posts)The three criterions for judging a fight are effective aggression, defense, and ring generalship...My Filipina girlfriend and I were heavily emotionally invested in Manny...
He lost...It was incumbent upon him to cut off the ring and make Mayweather fight. He didn't come close and lost. Except for a flurry here and there Mayweather looked very comfortable.
You mentioned the Ali-Frazier fights...Ali is my hero, my idol but he lost the first fight of their trilogy because he fought Frazier's fight or Frazier forced him to fight his fight...
Interestingly enough he followed the Mayweather plan in their rematch and danced around Joe , pot shotting him all night, and holding him whenever he got inside. Ali won a somewhat boring, lopsided decision where he escaped unscathed.
Their third fight was a war and both men suffered immeasurable damage because they both fought flat footed in the center of the ring. That fight ended with a nearly blind Frazier retiring on his stool in the fourteenth round.
My dad was a Golden Gloves boxer, my uncle was a pro boxer who retired due to a detached retina. They didn't want me to get anywhere near a ring but they did tell me if you are not cautious in it you will pay.

(11,101 posts)As I said down thread, it was pacquiao- heavy, slow, hurt shoulder apparently- that kept it from being a "fight of the century". It really was 5 years too late. Guy Whitey Corngood
(26,500 posts)did find the grabbing on Mayweather's part., although strategic and nothing new, to be excessive. But the "Sugar Ray" type weaving and dancing around is typical of him. I do recall De La Holla losing to Trinidad for his blatant running away for 6 rounds. But I wouldn't say this was that.

(5,739 posts)Mayweather spent literally the entire fight running away and counter jabbing. Yeah he is fast and he deserved to win, but it was painful to watch and resembled nothing of what a real fight looks like. If you had put a MMA fighter in there with he would have got destroyed.

(5,739 posts)It isn't boxing. I'm an amateur boxer myself and I found that the under cards were actually far more entertaining given they ya know, actually fought.
DefenseLawyer
(11,101 posts)And you wanted to see an MMA fighter in the ring? That's curious. As an "amateur boxer", unless you are a tomato can, you must know that the object of the match is to hit your opponent while avoiding being hit, which is what Mayweather did. He landed far more punches and Pacquiao's scoring punches were less than 20%. Mayweather did what he always does and controlled the fight. If not letting himself get beat up is boring to you, I'm not sure why you watched a Mayweather fight in the first place.
Kurska
(5,739 posts)He is a great fighter. It is just excruciating to watch a fight like that for 99% of people. Again, it is a perfect example of why the sport is dying. No one wants to watch that outside of purists.

(10,362 posts)A fight between two legends past their prime. And with so much money involved, and with the end of their careers shortly, I felt both boxers were mentally counting their money throughout. Mayweather's style always brings disappointment from neutrals.
This is why no matter how fast and technical these lower weight class fighters get, they can't match the entertainment of the legendary heavyweight bouts. Their punches just don't do enough damage by comparison. Defensive fighting styles, with the goal of merely landing more punches ro get the decision, are boring. People want knockouts and slugfests. The so-called Fight of the Century can't be a bout where neither fighter lands a blow strong enough to daze his opponent in 12 rounds
