I was a RN. Not necessarily the best but I was a preceptor. When I saw a RN doing something wrong I would let them know. If they repeated, I let supervisory know so corrective actions could be taken. These days when I see police officers do something not right, what I see is total defense of that officer. He should be taught by fellow officers, but no, there is a silent affirmation of what they have done. When an illegal action is done by a police officer, the others are at fault for not saying something about it. The guilt is shared and not diminished by the numbers in the know. To be a servant of the people is something to be proud about, not something to help the wrong people cover up. It is true the people they deal with are not saints by any means. There are ways to deal with them without putting that person in jeopardy, or God forbid, others. We live in America and we have standards to stand up to. We have fellow Americans to support. Fellow Americans. Everybody has a different set of difficulties to live with and some are not very pleasant. We need to overlook their difficulties and help them. They are still Americans. So what I am saying is that I am not going to change police officers and their behavior, other officers are going to do that. Stand up and do the right thing. Don't let the talking heads say that things are justified. They are not. The talking heads are leading an agenda contrary to what is the American standard, and that standard is that all Americans deserve more and better, not just a few Americans.
New at this and just had to say what I thought

(3,580 posts)I tell them if you do something wrong to immediately report it and take corrective action. Covering up always makes things worse. I have reported myself. It saved my job and license. I give the staff member the opportunity to report themselves. But one way or another it doesn't get swept under the rug. Its amazing that people will forgive a mistake. But you have to be honest.
With Freddie gray I wonder when they discovered the legal knife they felt they couldn't go backwards. How different it would have turned out for all of them if they had not illegally arrested him. Maybe gray is still alive and a few of the cops get a few days in the street with no pay.

(1,388 posts)What I was so ineptly trying to say is that "our men and women in uniform" never have to account for anything. What is needed is the courage of their peers to step to the plate and say that things are going wrong and it needs to change. Just beaus they are dressed in blue or white or camo, they seem to be able to get away with anything. When one of theirs is killed in action it is a tragedy, and it is, but it is also a tragedy when anyone not in colors are killed it is not any less a tragedy. And when the streets are lined with people in support of those people killed, they are terrorists or thugs or general malcontents. The men and women in uniform have a built in system of protection and of being honored, even when they do wrong. The people in uniform have the responsibility to correct their own, up to a point.
