DSCC, Indiana Dems Commemorate Lugar, Slam Mourdock

The national and state Democrats are already out with statements in the Indiana primary, in which longtime Republican Sen. Dick Lugar is projected to lose to the more right-wing state Treasurer Richard Mourdock. And they are striking a conciliatory tone toward Lugar, in an effort to depict Mourdock as out of the mainstream, as Mourdock heads into the general election against Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly.

The statement from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s executive director Guy Cecil:

“Richard Mourdock is this year’s Ken Buck. Tonight’s results make the Indiana Senate race a toss-up race.”

“Tens of thousands of Hoosiers who have voted for Dick Lugar their entire voting lives are going to reject a Tea Party candidate like Richard Mourdock and support an honest, common sense job creator like Joe Donnelly.

“Richard Mourdock is a right wing Tea Party ideologue who questioned the constitutionality of Medicare and Social Security, says there should be more partisanship and less compromise in Washington, and actually compared himself to Rosa Parks.”

And the statement from the Indiana Democrats:

“Like all Hoosiers, we owe Senator Lugar a debt of gratitude for his long and storied career. From his service as a Naval Officer to the United States Senate, Senator Lugar has spent over half a century doing difficult work on behalf of Hoosiers,” said Democratic Party Chairman Dan Parker.

“His successor will come into office facing a still-recovering economy and thousands of Hoosier families struggling to pay the bills. The man that won tonight’s Republican primary, Richard Mourdock, is a TEA Party extremist who is out of touch with Hoosiers. After telling the Indianapolis Star that he ‘didn’t take a pledge to support every Hoosier job’ while challenging the rescue of Chrysler, Mourdock called his attempt to kill more than 1.1 million jobs his ‘Rosa Parks moment.’”

“Richard Mourdock thinks Social Security and Medicare are unconstitutional, wants to cut $11 billion from funding for veterans’ care and $5 billion from Indiana students and classrooms. Hoosiers deserve real leadership that will reach across the aisle in Richard Lugar’s successor, not Richard Mourdock’s TEA Party extremism.”
