Take an example from a decade ago, one that sticks in my mind because it was so egregious.

One was a picture of a grieving mother in the rain at her son's grave. It was a private, solitary moment, showing her utter heartfelt grief. There was also video of the same scene. It aired on national tv.

Then there was the Getty photo original of the same shot. It showed the reporters' tent, the dozen photographers and videographers and vans and the food table set up for the photo op, along with the other reporters and the guys working the rebroadcast equipment in the van. Then there were the PR people and other supporters. A good 30-40 people were there for the solitary graveside moment. The unedited video showed her rehearsing the scene, getting her positions ironed out ahead of time so that the camera angles were just right. It took about 30 minutes to get the proper heartfelt, impromptu scene set up and make sure that the background didn't spoil the shot with people and equipment and food and tents and then close-ups and photocropping to remove all the hustle and bustle next to the woman.

It was a moving shot. And utterly staged and rehearsed to be moving.

You can do the same with video. Don't catch what triggered a response. Just get the response on video. Focus on the victim. You get what you want, and the viewer sees what you want. It's a quick and easy way to manipulate people. It's the unedited, unexpurgated version you want to see, with sufficient time leading up to the event and good coverage from multiple angles with easy audio that's important.

One of the suspects in the shooting in Garland, Texas late Sunday has been identified as Elton Simpson, an Arizona man who was previously the subject of a terror investigation, according to a senior FBI official.

Overnight and today FBI agents and a bomb squad were at Simpson's home in an apartment complex in north Phoenix where a robot is believed to be conducting an initial search of the apartment.

Officials believe Simpson is the person who sent out several Twitter messages prior to the attack on Sunday, in the last one using the hashtag #TexasAttack about half an hour before the shooting.

{snip}

Simpson was well known to the FBI. Five years ago he was convicted for lying to federal agents about his plans to travel to Africa, but a judge ruled the government did not adequately prove he was going to join a terror group there.

The Texas attackers have not been named, but one of the men thought to be behind the attack - going by the Twitter handle @atawaakul and the name "Shariah is Light" - tweeted his support for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) 15 minutes before the shooting.

His Twitter photo shows Anwar Al-Awlaki, the American-born leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), who was killed in a US drone strike in 2011.

He states that he has "given bay'ah" - sworn an oath of allegiance - to Amirul Mu'mineen, a title which is given in the Koran to the prince of the caliphs. Supporters of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of Isil, refer to him as Amirul Mu'mineen.

Other tweets grabbed before the account was shut down suggested the individual behind the account was a recent convert. He made statements such as: "I don’t know Arabic" and "my fam didn’t trip when I became a Muslim".

21. 2nd gunman identified as Nadir Soofi, roommate of Simpson
Mon May 4, 2015, 01:47 PM
May 2015
One of the gunmen authorities say opened fire Sunday outside an exhibition of cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad had previously been suspected of trying to fly overseas and wage violent jihad, according to court records.

He was identified as Elton Simpson, 30, of Phoenix, according to a U.S. law enforcement official. Law enforcement officials said Monday afternoon that the second shooter in the Texas attack was Nadir Soofi, 34, Simpson’s roommate.

FBI agents searched a Phoenix apartment Monday as part of the investigation into the shooting, which occurred Sunday evening in Garland, a city near Dallas. Authorities said Monday that they were still working to determine details about the two men and who may have instigated the plan. The FBI does not believe the shooting was directed by an international terrorist group, but is still investigating.
