The storied Riviera hotel, a fixture on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip for 60 years, closed its doors today.
The 23-story hotel, the first high-rise resort on the Strip, was purchased in February by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for $182.5 million and the property will some day become the front door to a revamped convention center complex, the $2.3 billion Las Vegas Global Business District.
The hotel was scheduled to close at noon, and state Gaming Control Board officials were expected to be on the site this morning for final preparations of the shut-down.

This was the first Vegas hotel I ever stayed at, so long ago that I remember that Sammy Davis Jr. was headlining somewhere on the strip.

(38,958 posts)I stayed there once many years ago (1980's?) and it was a very nice hotel although most of my visits to LV were at the Tropicana for a trade show each year. The first year was the Imperial Palace and that was interesting.
