Pamela Geller, 56, is the president of an organization called the American Freedom Defense Initiative. Like most groups that festoon themselves in such empty, nonsensical, star-spangled pablum, the AFDI is a panoply of racism and Islamophobia.

In the aftermath, some were quick to draw comparisons between the attack on Gellers event and the slaying of 12 staffers at the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical weekly known for printing caricatures of the prophet Muhammad and distasteful depictions of Muslims. This is wrongheaded in every regardnot least of which: it insults the memories of those murdered.

While Geller pretends to live a real-life version of Independence Day, the families of those killed in Paris are still picking up the pieces; their lives, families, and sense of security utterly shattered. They did not volunteer for this culture war. Geller and the AFDI unquestionably did. An although they were not asking for such violent retribution, they have certainly welcomed it in the aftermath. Ticket-holders reportedly sang patriotic songs as they evacuated the event site.
The excitement was palpable. They could not believe their luck.

(34,845 posts)It's difficult to get an idea of what was actually at this 'contest' since no one, apparently, knows. It's become all about Geller, which is understandable, but it seems we lack any actual information about this 'contest'.

The lyrics to the songbird's melodious trill go something like this:
"Stay out of my territory or I'll PECK YOUR GODDAMNED EYES OUT!"
(45,319 posts)minority groups, always doubling down when they begin to see the violent results of their efforts, just as Francis saw Uganda pass anti gay pogrom laws and instantly launched his 'gay rights are from Satan, fighting them is God's war' campaign. Everyday in the US alone there are about 3 physical attacks of LGBT people, and while those who follow Francis or Pat Robertson or the GOP will insist that all that raging hate speech is entirely unrelated to the anti gay laws and criminal acts that happen every fucking day, I do not agree with them at all.
