Baltimore police commissioner: "We are part of the problem"

Baltimore police commissioner: "We are part of the problem"

Updated by German Lopez on May 5, 2015, 5:01 p.m. ET

In an interview with CNN's Evan Perez, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts said police need to recognize that "we are part of the problem" — acknowledging that distrust toward police fueled the tense protests in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray, who suffered a fatal spinal cord injury while under police custody.

"The community needs to hear that," he said. "The community needs to hear from us that we haven't been part of the solution, and now we have to evolve. Now we have to change."

The damage has been done. While its nice to hear I'm more interested in what's "behind the scenes". Typically chiefs are worried about the image of the department because its an image of their job so a lot of them suppress or cover up problems instead of real reforms, I'm interesting in behind the scenes what is going on right now to see to know if Baltimore needs a new one or not. I'd recommend former Police Chief Garcia if Batts isn't the right man for the job or bring back Ed Norris even though that will never happen.
