MINNEAPOLIS
The nation’s largest one-day food drive is coming Saturday, May 9, organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Your participation is simple. Place a few cans of non-perishable food items near your mailbox the morning of May 9 and your letter carrier will pick up your donation later in the day.

A few days before, your letter carrier even will drop off a blue plastic bag that you can use for donated food items.

“Fill a bag, feed a family,” urged Samantha Hartwig, Coon Rapids, food drive coordinator for NALC Branch 9 in Minneapolis and a letter carrier for 11 years. “Even though the economy as a whole has gotten better, it hasn’t trickled down to everybody. The need is still out there.”

We get wonderful community support around the winter holidays at our neighborhood food bank, but by early summer we're biting our fingernails, hoping we can feed everyone with what's left. The letter carrier's drive comes at exactly the right time to keep things going until fall and winter. So please be generous on May 9.

I donate a few times a year - I like reading the news updates they send me, with testimonials from real people in the community who have been helped by the food bank

We didn't get a bag yet, and we always give. I was expecting them at Christmas for some reason....

Knowing a couple of days in advance give me a chance to pick up some fresh stuff on sale . . .

Thank you Dear Steve....
