Oil leaked into the Hudson River on Sunday after a transformer fire and explosion a day earlier at the Indian Point nuclear plant north of New York City, and Governor Andrew Cuomo said he was concerned about environmental damage.
Cuomo visited the plant for a briefing on Sunday. The governor, who in the past has called for the plant to be shut down because of its proximity to densely populated New York City, also visited the plant on Saturday.
When the transformer exploded, it released oil into a holding tank, which then overflowed, sending oil onto the ground and into the river, Cuomo told reporters on Sunday after he was briefed by emergency and plant officials.

(36,818 posts)Most transformer oil today is mineral oil, which is also used to rub down babies. I use it on my wooden cutting board.

(26,721 posts)Sure... it was a transformer just like any other - and sure... highly refined mineral oil has very little toxicity...
but this happened at a nuclear power plant (a plant which Cuomo has been fighting for 15 years now). So we'll no doubt read how this fire very nearly caused a nuclear meltdown endangering the lives of millions of people in New York.
Any time you can put "fire" and "explosion" in the same sentence as "nuclear reactor"... there are some knees that jerk.

(36,818 posts)So any points missed appear to be on your part. Furthermore any imaginary point you think I missed was probably because I'm just not that paranoid. Transformer explosions are quite common. They happen all the time inside substations and cause so little damage to the periphery that they are repaired within a couple of hours. So if you want to jerk knees, be my guest, but that doesn't mean this is anything which is any kind of rational threat to anyone.

(26,721 posts)It's clear that the OP's focus was indeed that it was at a nuclear plant.
but that doesn't mean this is anything which is any kind of rational threat to anyone.
Which you get... and I get... but the usual anti-nuke crowd here can't get. If someone working at a nuclear plant ties a granny when he intended to tie a square knot... there's a meltdown threat.
