Good in my opinion. The more one knows about Andrew Jackson the more one realizes he wasn't a good man. Maybe a good general per his defeat of the British at the Battle of New Orleans but not a nice man overall.
Apologies to backers of both Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosa Parks, but abolitionist Harriet Tubman emerged as the winner in a contest that drew more than 600,000 votes.
Women on 20s has been advocating for a womans face to replace Jackson on the $20 bill for months and will now present a petition to President Obama with its pick.
Tubman garnered 118,328 votes, narrowly beating out Roosevelts 111,227.
Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, as the group points out, and also was a slave owner, which could make replacing him with the conductor of the Underground Railroad a fitting pick. Legislation to make his replacement a reality has already been introduced in Washington.

(7,234 posts)when its not their country. The majority of US government representatives are of European, African and Spanish descent. There are almost no Native Americans.
At least the genocidal European colonists wanted slaves alive to exploit them for labor but they wanted Native Americans wiped out so they killed MILLIONS. Some estimate that 100 million Native Americans slaughtered for this land.
Its absolutely shameful.

Buffalo/Indian Head nickel (1913-38)
Indian Head half eagle ($5 gold piece, 1908-1929. The same design also appeared on the $2.50 gold piece)
Indian Head penny (1859-1909)
And today there is a US gold bullion coin that has the same design as the Buffalo/Indian Head nickel, although very few people know they exist

(51,907 posts)I think more people need to know 19th century history--Tubman was a contemporary of Jackson, but on the right side of history.

(80,708 posts)Leaving aside the relative merits of Ms. Tubman and the myriad terrible things for which Andrew Jackson was undeniably responsible, the fact is he's not going to be taken off the twenty any time soon.
I could probably get 100K people to vote to put Jerry Garcia on the ten, but that isn't actually going to happen, either.

(80,708 posts)But I lean more towards the postmodern, or surrealist take on money anyway, so probably Bugs Bunny or Elmer Fudd would be a better choice.
Honestly what our paper money also could use? Some color. Just plain green is BORING!

(31,811 posts)When the idea of a woman American hero was first floated - and I voted Tubman.
Know why?
She wouldn't care.
She'd tell us all: enough of your jibber jabber! Get back to work! Don't you people have anything more important to do? You know what I did? Go do something like that you lazy damn fools!
That's why she would be awesome. Grew up with a mom in hotel and tourism in Western NY so I'm a bit of a student of notable folks from that area.
If she has ny knowledge of this - she's soooooo above it all and sooooo over it already.
