(13,877 posts)6-7 year olds to read was one of my joys..and theirs.
They are eager to learn, a bit wiggly, but when they learn their sounds and sound out their first word, and connect it with an object, it's uphill from there. Then the Sight Words can be taught by rote...after they learn the relationship of sounds to letters, then words.
I taught in a Title 1 school, poor and heavily Spanish-speaking. This is plainly an outrage. I'm shocked.

I saw another chart somewhere that said literacy was 99% in the U.S. though.
I wonder where the data comes From?

If I won the lottery or otherwise made a fortune where I could retire, I'd want to volunteer to help increase literacy with immigrants and others who need it to improve their lives.

I find it scary when I learn how many people never read for pleasure once they finish their education. Even many who complete college never read again.

(8,421 posts)you are learning to read, after that you are reading to learn. (That't a little simplistic as you are always 'learning to read' but it is close...)
