http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/05/13/john-legend-jon-stewart-interview_n_7277886.htmlSome racism is very easy to identify but a lot of racism is structural, and in the criminal justice system it often plays out in sentencing and who gets charged for what, in how juries are picked, he explained. All these things that end up discounting the value of black lives versus other lives.
In light of Glenn Beck's take down of Michelle Obama for speaking about her experiences with racism during her commencement speech at Tuskegee University earlier this week, Legend gave his perspective on the defensiveness of white conservatives.
We dont want to talk about racism all the time. If it werent here, if we didnt have to deal with it everyday, we would love for it not to be a subject of conversation, Legend admitted. We would love to just live our lives in equality and in justice for all. We would love that but its killing our kids, its resulting in so much pain and suffering for our community so we have to bring it up.

(45,319 posts)SOUTHERN RITES (May 18-HBO) visits Montgomery County, Ga., one year after the town merged its racially segregated proms, and during a historic election campaign that may lead to its first African-American sheriff. Acclaimed photographer Gillian Laub, whose photos first brought the area unwanted notoriety, documents the repercussions when a white town resident is charged with the murder of a young black man. The case divides locals along well-worn racial lines, and the ensuing plea bargain and sentencing uncover complex truths and produce emotional revelations. This timely film debuts the week of the Supreme Courts landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision 61 years ago.
