January 24, 2014
The president wont be able to look to organized labor. Unions are overwhelmingly opposed to a deal that Communications Workers of America posters refer to as NAFTA on Steroids.
The president wont be able to look to major environmental organizations. The Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth and other green groups are outspoken in their opposition.
The president wont be able to look to progressive farm groups. The National Farmers Union is explicitly opposed to using a fast-track approach that would allow trade agreements to move through Congress with limited debate and without amendments.

That group is the American Legislative Exchange Council.
ALEC, the corporate-funded organization that stirred considerable controversy several years ago with its advocacy on behalf of so-called Stand Your Ground gun laws and restrictive Voter ID rules, produces so-called model legislation for introduction by conservative state legislators. Last fall, the ALEC board of directors approved and circulated a Model Policy that celebrates the TPP and declares that it will be an impetus for further bilateral and multilateral trade agreements

And here's detailed piece about the Environmental Org world being misrepresented by the WH- and having to take down cherry-picked, out of context quotes. Support for the tpp from Environmental groupswent from being "wait and see" to active opposition after they read and analyzed the leaked Environment chapter which was released in 2014.

So can we please cut the crap about who supports the tpp- the crap about democrats being divided and about how Rand Paul and other tea partiers support it. It's just an attempt to muddy the waters and make it look like President Obama has democratic and liberal support. He doesn't. Support for it comes from corporate America and Repukes.
That's the company that the President and his supporters are keeping.

(34,661 posts)National crisis of some financial nature to right the ship of State. Bottom line is a readjustment of wealth and it is not going to be pretty. Something one needs to follow in the short run is what is happening with Agriculture and the number of Farmers who are financially messed up. Ironic to say, most are diehard Republicans and they as a group have a big time hard on for Mr. Obama. Talked to a acquaintance who is the President of one of the biggest Ag Lenders in Minnesota and he said this year will be a huge shake out in the Midwest Farm Community. And to think they are the so called rank and file Republican voters. Titan Corp and Cargill will make out like the old time Robber Barons. Yup,got to get them exports, yah, right we have heard that song before. Just ask Nixon.

(36,063 posts)Indeed what we got was constant brinksmanship and shutdowns, bailout of the banksters who created the crisis, hollowing out of median earners and militarization of local and state police to keep the lid on.
Seems pointless to look for a new Pearl Harbor that will somehow allow a "Shock Doctrine for the People".
My crystal ball says the path we are on is the one that will continue. And down the road it is much more likely to deliver social programs that similar to the treatment of homeless cats ... the long term unemployed, homeless will be captured, neutered.

(7,830 posts)We lose more jobs here(no wages), they get virtual slavery there(slave wages), and CEOs & majority stockholders rake in the profits, so much so that the billion$ they spend buying our elected officials isn't missed at all. Just the cost of doing business.

(50,983 posts)How damaging will this be to the Democratic Party? If the TPP passes the Democratic Party might be mortally wounded.
cali
(114,904 posts)may be damaged as well, but in any case my concerns lie not so much with the health of the democratic party as with the damaging ramifications of the tpp.
