A former chicken hatchery on the outskirts of Norfolk, Nebraska, is being converted into what is being called a much-needed animal shelter for northeast Nebraska.
Sydney Hurley, executive director of the Animal Shelter of Northeast Nebraska, said about $300,000 is needed to reach a goal of $1.5 million for the project. The shelter has been operating out of foster homes since 1996.
Outside of the Norfolk area, there really isnt anywhere else for these animals to get help, Hurley said. This shelter is a much-needed addition for the whole area.
Members of the Norfolk Fire Department pitched in Tuesday and Wednesday with demolition work inside the 21,000-square-foot building that was purchased for $400,000. Remodeling of about 5,500 square feet is expected to start by the end of May.
