Gateway staff started a project for students to create fleece blankets to keep them warm after hearing about one student who didn’t have one of his own. It began after a student asked social studies teacher Pam Dawson for a blanket after one was taken from her. Dawson and social worker Julia Boone decided to not only help that student, but other students as well.
They planned to buy enough fleece material to begin making blankets in the fall. They set up a donation site and collected $1,000 within 24 hours. Because of the generosity of others, they were able to purchase fleece to make blankets right away and have enough to make more next school year.
The students and staff worked together to make t

NOT the best writing for such a large district but in such a large district to get a feature article is pretty awesome. I couldn't have done it without you all and I humbly thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart.

You did a very serious job with those blankets and you deserve all the good publicity you're getting!

one of the local fabric stores had a huge sale this weekend and I took advantage of it. I purchased pieces of various solids ($125.00) to make 25 blankets and we have them stored for next year. I didn't buy any of the prints as we really don't know the personality or gender of the students for next year but I will be on the lookout for more good deals !

they should have just taken the story from the gofundme page.

However, I am extremely grateful that it got coverage because I think it is so important.

I am exploring ways to get funding to keep this going every semester. If we want students to learn and excel, their basic needs have to be met first.

if I can get another great deal on the prints to go with the solids I just bought for around 100.00 there will be enough to do it this next fall and spring. Then after that we will have to raise more funding.

I would love for this to be something we do twice a year for the rest of my teaching career.

take care of basic needs, you would be surprised at how students respond!

as you know, we are sort of two schools in one MS/HS and we don't really want interaction between them for obvious reasons but I have had MS kids come ask me when they can do a blanket.
