In what was an expected outcome, but still one that is a bit shocking, tea party-aligned candidate Richard Mourdock defeated Sen. Richard Lugar in the Indiana Republican primary on Tuesday. Mourdock is the state's treasurer and he hasn't spent much time on the national scene, but it's clear that he's one of the most extreme right-wing candidates running in the 2012 elections. Let's take a closer look...

The race gets competetive, and maybe even moves into "Tossup" territory, but unlik O'Donnell or Angle, Mourdock has the support of most of the Party structure in Indiana, and won't have a problem raising money.

Blue Dog Evan Bayh won as Secretary of State, 2 terms as Governor, 2 terms as Senator.

Real Democrat Frank O'Bannon won as Governor 2 terms immediately after Bayh.

Lukewarm Joe Kernan might have beaten Daniels if he had only been in the race from the beginning instead of bowing out and then getting back in.

Obama won Indiana the first time since 1964.

Labor and teachers are motivated because of legislation attacking them in Indiana.

Women are more motivated.

14. Being a Hoosier, I do know the average Hoosier voter.

And yes, it is a Republican leaning state but it went for Obama in 08 and elected Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon twice each for Governor and Bayh twice, quite handily, to the Senate. Leans republican, most definitely, but the tiny sliver of Republicans that vote in a Primary isn't really reflective of the Republican Party here, much less the electorate as a whole. There are just as many "old time" Republicans here as there are Tea-Baggers. In addition the Democratic strongholds, Indianapolis and "the Region" have a great numerical advantage for Democrats. If Mourdock runs his full blown "I'm a nut and I'm proud" campaign and Dems can get out the vote like we did in 2008, Donnelly has a shot.

I don't think he's going to be a Sharon Angle or Christine O'Donnell (i.e. a loser who snatches defeat from the jaws of victory).

It might end up hinging on Obama's coattails. If Obama does well in Indiana, you might be right. If he doesn't, maybe not.
