Letterman

Last night was pretty good. Bill Murray never disappoints...he did hit a tender spot when he was talking to Dave and said, to paraphrase, that he was at the top, and had had a child by a virgin whom he married, (this is where Dave looked uncomfortable) He said he would not use their friendship to ask David not to retire. After clips of his apearances with Letterman, he had to struggle to hold back his tears so as not to embarrass himself or Letterman.. He was slow on the draw when Letterman asked about his next movie, program, whatever, and seemed not to want to talk about it. How different from Hanks.

Bill Murray appeared on Lawrence O'Donnell's program after the taping on Letteman's show was done...he had washed of all his icing and cake. He was so so sad, and made no effort to be funny.

Bob Dylan was great too...Lucky audience. Some tears here.

There's no smilie for crying . .

He looked so sad and I thought he'd cry or had been crying.

Letterman is an American treasure, but so are Bill and Bob

Regina, Dave's wife, was a virgin when she had Harry. They didn't marry till later.

I think that's one of the 3 things that make David so damned important, and at the same time, loved.

He wasn't perfect and never pretended to be.

The first thing was the day of 9/11/01, he came on TV that night and said just the right things. That was so important beause to a lot of us, it looked like we were at war, and it all seemed so hopeless.

The next was when he and his girlfriend had the child. He was overcome with love and confusion as to what to do with it.

The 3rd thing was when he was being framed for having sexual affairs with 2 staffers. He told us about it. He told us about being blackmailed by an CBS executive, and how he went to the NY cops, and reported the crime, and the guy got 4 months in jail.

Part of 3, but it was part of our love affair with David...he was contrite about hurting Regina, "horribly," and he knew he did something wrong because she was true to him and loved their child. He said he was going to make it up to her starting now.

These weren't discussed on last night's program, only the part of Murray saying that Dave had a child by virgin, who Bill cutely said that that part Regina had outgrown, thankfully.

I just don't get it somehow.

So she had a baby by immaculate conception? Sorry, this makes no sense.

I think Bill just wanted to say it that way, "you had a child by a virgin," or something like that to make it sound like "Mary." The point is, Regina was no slut who slept around. That's how I took it.

Maybe that's why Dave felt so guilty for hurting her.

This part about the attempted blackmail and the cheating, etc., was told on CNN on Jake Tapper's 9:00 special yesterday, that will probably be repeated, as CNN repeats everything over the weekend.

Yes, I remember the cheating thing. He's lucky she didn't kick him to the curb.

I'm a longtime fan of Letterman's.

The Sunday NY Times did a great piece on his retirement recently.
