In fact everyone at MSNBC and NBC at the time knew it. I don't know about other news media organizations, but I know about NBC and MSNBC.

and played along with the patriotic bullshit.

They continue to lie about what's going on in the ME - it's mostly about stealing oil and of course getting rid of the only part of Sharia Law that they hate - interest and usury.

Phil Griffin (exec at MSNBC) actually sent out a "we must support George Bush" bullshit email to all the staff at the time. I saw it because my wife worked there. It was appalling.
