(24,411 posts)When children commit incest it is a symptom of a much large problem--which usually involves a horrendously dysfunctional family system.
When children and teenagers molest their siblings, it is usually because they are playing out abuse that happened to them. If this were just garden variety "exploring" or sexual desires, it would be happening with a girlfriend. To cross that boundary between siblings, means that he was exploiting them.
Kids and teenagers don't do this behavior for no behavior. They are usually compelled to do this because someone older and more powerful powered up on them and molested them. That's the reason an abuse victim choses a younger sibling. They are re-creating the power differential and acting out on that.
This family has some VERY dark secrets. So, he molested four of his siblings and the parents do not report this? They do not seek psychological counseling for their son? That's a telltale sign that the parents were covering up their own abuse of their children. Any therapist worth their salt would understand that a child acting out sexually with siblings means that the "acting out" child was also victimized. Jim Bob didn't want his secrets to be revealed! He didn't get his own son help when this happened. He obfuscated and practically hid his son away. Isn't this so revealing? Jim Bob was hiding his own crimes--and his son's behavior was merely a symptom of his own sexual crimes within the family.
And notice that his younger siblings did not tell? That is a further sign that this family is messed up. These girls were most likely threatened by their older siblings not to tell. Their silence indicates that these girls did not trust their parents enough to tell them.
Anyone who does not think that the entire family is a nest of pedophiles and victims---is not aware of what happens to families in which their is sexual abuse. The Duggars are very typical of a dysfunctional, abusive family.

(13,459 posts)I don't see this as entirely about a 14 year old molesting his younger sisters. This family is dysfunctional, this situation completely obliterates the so-called wholesome and good exterior they want to present. They obviously are failing their children miserably, even their solution to the problem, which was cover it up and let sonny-boy go do some construction work with a guy now in prison for kiddy-porn, expose them as very poor parents.
This contrasts with their irrational hate for LGBT people, since they covered up for real child abuse in their own home.
And then there is the question about what the 14 year old boy may have experienced that contributed to his abusing his siblings?
This bunch has even more dirty laundry than this, that's my guess.

(16,245 posts)This type of belief system is damaging to people. Unless they get out, they (all of them) will remain fucked up.
Certainly, molesting your sisters (whatever that actually means in this context) is beyond fucked-up. But the real issue is the lack of justice and healing. Their abhorrent belief system only causes this to be shoved under the rug, in a "Let's pretend we've dealt with this sort of way."
I'm not one of those people who necessarily thinks he should be locked up and the key thrown away forever. But he bears watching and certainly should have been punished in some way, and everyone should have gotten counseling at minimum.

(29,658 posts)and his juvenile record were released I would be upset, mention privacy issues especially in juvenile cases. Same for shoplifting or any other number of cases. Sex assault of any kind is different, imho. I believe that all ages need to be part of the public record in reference to sex crimes.
I worked in mental health for a number of years. To be specific, it was a state hospital. I worked for 2 1/2 years in a 552/pretrial ward. Nearly every single person there for a sex crime had a prior history and it wasn't uncommon to find out that it had been found during their teen years. (How did we find this out? Because in a couple of pretrial cases it was mentioned by the individual awaiting trial.) If the sex crimes had been outed in their teen years there might not have been crimes as an adult. Instead,as a juvenile they could have recommended treatment and have addressed how to prevent getting themselves into situations in the future where they might be tempted. Instead, we have situations like this.
(When it comes to sex crimes I do not include public urination or "Romeo and Juliet" type statuatory cases. Nearly everything else needs documented and the public should be in the know.)

(20,582 posts)I watched it a few times and was actually really enjoying the kids, they were funny, sweet and made me laugh. Then I learned how they were raised - the oldest girls each having a younger one to mentor and watch over as they grew from the time they were a baby - getting up in the night with them, feeding, changing and all, the mountains of laundry one girl was assigned to, the cooking to another, homeschooling to another ..... and on and on. The oldest girls seemed to be relegated to almost household slave status - but with just enough perks such as family fun times, traveling etc. that they really shouldn't complain. I don't think I ever saw Michelle do much work - and Jim Bob, none at all - though I'm sure he probably must have. The boys seemed to just play, though I'm sure they must have dome something else, too.
It will be interesting years from now to see if how they were raised affects these girls negatively, especially those who do not marry into the same. Those who were assaulted - just very sad for them. It's something that no matter how much counseling you get and how many years go by, never leaves you. They'll have the additional horror of wondering why their parents chose to place them right back in the same situation with him once he got home, why they didn't notice something was going on, why their own brother could do what he did. And I know that they'll mostly blame themselves. He sentenced them to a lifetime of questioning their self-worth, which is a devastating thing to do to someone. Maybe they'll all move on and overcome this to be a happy family - it's just my opinion though that the lid's going to blow for some of them, eventually.
StevieM

polly7
(20,582 posts)I'd be mad enough to do something pretty illegal. I read that cop is in jail for child porn for a long, long time - doesn't it seem strange that he'd be the one who would be approached? Probably Jim Bob had no idea, but still ....... weird. I personally doubt the girls got any kind of counseling that would help much, and believe they're going to struggle with this emotionally for a long, long time. Anyone who's been through any kind of sexual assault knows that it never, ever leaves you - I can't imagine being kept awake at night trying to understand how your own brother could do this, and what you did to deserve it.

(44,397 posts)Jim Bob then met with the elders of his church and told them what was going on. No one alerted the police or any other law enforcement agency. Instead they decided to send Josh to a program [that] consisted of hard physical work and counseling. James said that [redacted, Josh] was in the program from March 17, 2003 until July 17, 2003.
He said the program was a Christian program. Michelle Duggar later admitted to police that Josh did not receive counseling and instead had been sent during that time to a family friend who was in the home remodeling business.
Asked about the training center that Jim Bob said Josh was sent to, Michelle told police, according to the report, it was not really a training center. Det. [Darrell] Hignite asked if the guy [redacted, Josh] talked to was a certified counselor. She said no. She said it was a guy they know in Little Rock that is remodeling a building. Det. Hignite asked if the guy was more of a mentor. She said kind of.

(64,979 posts)what any of them are doing at any given time.
Nor are they actually raising them. They're just collecting them, like cat hoarders, and leaving the older ones in charge of the younger ones much of the time. As the oldest, Josh probably was placed in authority over his younger siblings pretty often. I doubt the parents were concerned with how he interacted with them--or with much else that was going on in that home. And when anything was forced into their awareness, they undoubtedly did everything in their power to make it disappear again.

(20,582 posts)I read the older girls were all given a younger child - even the babies - to be in charge of - and raise, imo. I've seen and heard parts of the show a few times, it seemed like those girls did everything - the laundry, ironing, cooking, watching the younger ones, packing for everyone for their road-trips, and one even took over the homeschooling of some 'because she loved it so much and was so good at it'. I think the parents were more concerned with their show than with being hands on with the kids, so they were probably flabbergasted to hear it. I think too that most parents would recognize some signs, or at least that some of the daughters were acting unusually, being quiet, sad, jumpy, whatever.

(29,658 posts)Duck Dynasty ended after people protested. Honey Boo Boo ended after people protested over molestation charges-and the aggressor wasn't even on the show. The perp has been on the show for many years-there's no way people are going to be happy about a network broadcasting a molester.
The show is finally done for.

(50,566 posts)The poor Duggar girls. They are treated like slaves and chattel, and the treatment is justified by a stupid, convoluted, nonsensical book of fairy tales.

(28,581 posts)They sent him to remodel a building with some guy for a few months and he got 'right with god" and everything is fucking fine? These people are sick.
I do feel badly for the girl he married and has a kid/kids with. I imagine she is quite shocked.

What a sick bunch bunch of people. And their fans that are brushing this off are just as sick. Those girls are going to end up needing a lot of therapy in the future.

(13,459 posts)Cults can do what they want with women and girls and they will be supported in this country. Brainwash a girl form baby hood to have no rights and people will scream at you that her non-exercise of rights she doesn't know she has is her choice. It is the American way to defend this as freedom.

(30,099 posts)Do you feel this story will die off? I can't imagine that happening, and hope it does
not. One does not even know where to begin, the lack of accountability, the disregard
for the very young victims, and he now has a family of his own?
Ugh.

(29,658 posts)As Americans, we love mud slinging and love to watch an especially nasty downfall. We're also very forgiving but not usually for what has happened here. Most are seeing this as a bunch of hypocrites finally getting their comeuppance, even if the circumstances are disturbing.
There are constant posts demanding that TLC cancel the show immediately, requesting that all further appearances are cancelled and even that we, as a nation, out-and-out hotline them for this disturbing behavior.
I think it'll last.

(29,658 posts)Jim Bob spoke with a state trooper, a friend of the family, a year after it happened. There was no report filed. Instead, the trooper gave Josh a stern talking to. (That trooper is now serving a very long sentence for possession of child porn.) Bu the 2006 reporting it was too late-the statue had expired. All the police reports are from that hotlining from Harpo Studios.
