I read a post earlier today about long term unemployed. It pretty much echoed what I've been hearing a lot of. If you've over 50, you're screwed...good luck finding a job, age discrimination is rampant, hard to prove, nothing to be done about it. It occurred to me that people pretty much accept this as a fact of life and that this is just the way it is. Is it really okay to throw a hole bunch of folks in the trash heap just because they've lived too long, in someone's estimation? Seems to me that there must be a better way to enforce age discrimination in hiring, retention, etc. Wouldn't this be something both parties could get behind? I know that age is considered a protected class and that there is a legal prohibition against age discrimination, but it is completely toothless. I plan to reach out to Jackie Spieir, Barbara Boxer and Feinstein about this. Maybe it could be as simple as not collecting any age identifying information until an offer is made or prior to a background check. Any thoughts?

(15,472 posts)We never said that when we we're that age, not their fault . MSM has instilled in all of us a disdain for age, even though it's the reward for living .

(32,324 posts)I just got back from a trip to Chicago and was so startled by all the Robotic Kiosks that did everything from validating my parking and then collecting the fees for it, to my watching people fore go the long line at the one grocery clerk's line to do instant-Robotic-food and beverage scanning in a shorter line.
But I much agree with you about the older of us.
And the way the ACA is set up, so that those between 49 years old and 61 years old have sky high premiums, so that no thinking employer will want to have to pay for if he or she can hire two or three younger people for the price he or she would pay for one older person getting hired, that is problematic as well.
