Swimming is Good. Group in Kansas raising money so at risk kids can go swimming inspite of ks laws

Jane Deterding wants to make sure Wichita children get to swim this summer, even if their families don’t have much money.

“Every summer my mom said, ‘Get your chores done, or you can’t go to the pool,’ and that was just the worst punishment in the world,” said Deterding, chairman of Citizens Bank of Kansas. “We got them done and by 1 o’clock opening time, we were at the pool.

“It was our entire social mechanism. … And it’s crazy to eliminate that for needy families.”

Deterding said she and several friends were “chagrined” after state lawmakers imposed stricter limits on where welfare money can be spent, including at movie theaters and swimming pools. Gov. Sam Brownback signed the new restrictions into law last month.

What started as a lunchtime political discussion evolved into Swimming Is Good, an effort to buy and distribute swimming pool passes for needy children in the Wichita area.

In LA county, it used to be free for kids but now they charge $1. I have seen groups of kids who can't go in because they don't have the $$. I buy a couple of passes that they keep at the desk to check off when needed. We're dealing with obesity and kids not getting exercise in our country and now we want to deny them that? What the hell is wrong with this country? What better way for kids to keep cool and have fun while getting tons of exercise? Our priorities are so screwed up.

Good on anyone who is helping!

... that weasels elected to serve ALL the people are so determined to single out and victimize those least able to defend themselves. But then, bullies never grow up; they become Republicans.

How is it that the electoral majority of a state can be so malicious and vindictive that they will elect people like Brownback and his cronies in the legislature? MORE THAN ONCE! It sickens me.
