On July 1st workers in the California small city of Emeryville will have a $14.44 an hour minimum wage, with wait of years to get there. Emeryville’s city council voted to raise the minimum and make it effective this summer. The Los Angeles City Council recently voted for a $15 minimum wage, but it will be phased in over several years. Emeryville is near Oakland. Right now Oakland and San Francisco are tied for the highest minimum wage in the U.S. at $12.25 an hour. Emeryville’s city council and mayor believe that if you work full-time, you shouldn’t need public assistance to survive.
