Man Threatens Suicide, Police Kill Him

Justin Way was in his bed with a knife, threatening suicide. His girlfriend called a non-emergency number to try to get him into a hospital. Minutes later, he was shot and killed in his bedroom by cops with assault rifles.

On May 11, Justin Way was drinking and threatening to kill himself. His father, George Way, said his son was a recovering alcoholic and had been alcohol-free for five weeks.

“He just lost his job, and he had a setback,” he said.

Way’s live-in girlfriend, Kaitlyn Christine Lyons, said she’d caught Justin drinking a bottle of vodka, which she took away from him to pour out. She said he was drunk, lying in their bed with a large knife, saying he would hurt himself with it. She called a non-emergency number in an attempt to get her boyfriend to a local St. Augustine, Florida, hospital for help—and told them she did not feel threatened.

3. who hired these scaredy cat police?

they always seem to think they are in danger - I remember when they shot a 65 year old woman who weighed 200 pounds and had trouble walking because she threatened them with a knife 10 years ago and I had to wonder - don't they train the police to disarm people anymore? Or maybe just back up and stay away from the person threatening?

I liked what they said on the nightly show the other day - the cop is afraid for his life, so he jumps on the hood of a carto shoot people?????

Does that mean they would be better off if he was dead? Apparently they got what they wanted. The police that is.

to shoot people 15 times. It's not like he was a good shot or anything.

I think the overall number of shots during that melee, which was brought about by an expired inspection sticker or some such nonsense was 142 rounds fired into the vehicle, 60 police cars involved in the chase and some really crazy protect and serve meme.

The Daily Beast asked if it was standard procedure to bring assault rifles, but not mental-health professionals, to a scene where someone is suicidal.

I worked in Fla. under the Baker Act.
We ( Mental Heath professionals) would NEVER be at the scene where cops were called.
It is the responsibility of the cops to bring the person to an emergency Mental Health site, for evaluation.
The Mental Health person would be called ( one is always on call) and go the site and evaluate.
Sometimes we would have to go to jails and/or hospitals ( usually for drug issues).
Always in a controlled environment, never out in public or in homes.

In this case, the cops could have tazed the poor guy and brought him, in cuffs, to an evaluation site.

Denise Way, Justin’s mom, said that the detective relayed to her that “they told Justin to drop the knife and he didn’t—so they shot him because that’s what we do.”

How words change over the years.

1950 definition of police officer: a person whose job is to enforce laws, investigate crimes, and make arrests

2015 definition of police officer: someone who enjoys shooting people to death

... there were two deputies inside the home when the shooting happened ... Both deputies will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation ... “Let’s hold off on any sort of speculation. Let’s get into the investigation. We’ve got some interviews to do with individuals who knew the subject to determine what was going on, what his state of mind was. That’s all part of what we do in investigation,” Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan said ...

... Information such as what Way did to cause the deputies to fire and why he was despondent have yet to emerge ... Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan said more details may come out soon as the agency decides whether to release the 911 call, the names and backgrounds of the deputies and other information. But Mulligan said the deputies apparently had a reason to fire simultaneously. “Obviously both deputies felt threatened,” Mulligan said ...

"i felt threatened"
"he reached for his pants"
"etc etc etc etc"

All over used excuses that in a few cases are valid but hopefully with enough lawsuits, cops will start wearing cameras to protect themselves and it will help all of us against them.

This poor man and woman? What a damn shame and no. I do not trust "they both felt threatened".
