4. Republicans vote by mail and so the GOP does not want to restrict this type of voting

Voter ID laws do not apply to mail in ballots because republican voters vote in greater numbers by mail compared to Democratic voters. The GOP will not touch mail in ballots because it would hurt their voters.

9. Are you aware that two Blue States vote entirely by mail?

Here in Oregon we all vote by mail. There are no polling places, there is no voter ID requirement. So we learn from this that each State is different in election methods. What applies in your State, or what you assume to be true, certainly is not true in other States. Here, the number of voters voting by mail in each and all other Parties are 100% of all votes. We elect Democrats, we get far higher turn out than CA to the South with polling places although CA does not have voter ID requirements....

7. A very good question

The Wisconsin voter ID law, that is under two court injunctions right now and not effective for the recall elections, requires the voter to send a photocopy of a proper ID with the ballot. If you go to the city clerk to vote early in the two weeks before election, you must show it. The only exceptions are for people in nursing homes or group homes when election workers take ballots to them and those "indefinitely confined" to their homes because of disability. What I've never understood is how the election clerk is supposed to match the image on the ID with the voter if she can't see the voter. But then, Republicans are illogical about so many things.

8. Which State do you mean when you say 'the state'? Each state's rules are different...

Here in Oregon all of our voting is by mail, there is no ID requirement photo or otherwise. 19 States have no such requirement. The rest of the States break down into groups which have strict photo state issued only rules, and those which accept alternative ID from a piece of mail or from a witness's vouching, it all depends.
The real question for each Democrat is 'what are the rules in my State, how can we prevent those rules from hindering voters from voting, and how can the residents of each State make better voting law that puts access and ease of participation as a top priority.'
It is a mistake to think these ID laws are national, or that they are uniform, or that some States don't do things very differently than others....It is also a mistake to think that people outside your State can change your voting laws, or to wait for DC to act, as this all happens in State Houses. This is why Sec of State is such an important office and needs to be fill edwith Democrats. Liberal Democrats.
